Rob Schrab (who, among other things, wrote and drew the independent comic book Scud The Disposable Assassin and co-created the internet "television network" Channel 101) mentioned in some recent podcast interviews it's extremely hard in the current entertainment climate to get a horror anthology series sold to networks. Apparently it's considered too "niche" to be marketed to a mass audience, even on cable.

One of the failed pitches in his art book But I Can't Do Anything Else! is Midnight Drop Box, which was supposed to be a weekly anthology series that took place in a decaying video store with a ghoulish clerk (played by Crispin Glover!) who would showcase a new tale of comedy/terror each week. Comedy Central declined, because (sadly) the current crop of entertainment executives also hate horror with any comedic elements.

That show made certain I was home every Saturday night at 11:00. I never missed it. I forget the title, but my favorite was the one where one millionaire buys the soul of another in the hope he'll panic and want to but it back at triple the price. The ending was priceless.

Re: Tales from the Darkside

As soon as I saw the title of this thread, I thought to myself "The Cutty Black Sow." It made me smile how several other people mentioned that as well. I'm not sure it was my favorite, or if I even liked it that much, but the name has stuck in my head for 30 years, so that's rather amusing in and of itself!

Re: Tales from the Darkside

which was the one with the professor at the blackboard and the demon with the mirrorglass eyes?, it was a 50's 60's style trick story narrative ..remember this one, and strangely "Snip,Snip" the hairdresser based one ...also, of course, the one with the soul in the jar

Re: Tales from the Darkside

You can get most of these type of shows on disc now. As much as I like the idea of them, I tend to find them a bit underwhelming and would rather stick to the stories they're based on.

Re: Tales from the Darkside

The complete series is available on Shudder. I watched it as a child, but it hasn't held up for me with recent viewings. That said, however, "In The Closet" was one of the episodes I vividly remember (along with "The Tear Collector" and "Monster In My Room") - and "Snip Snip"was a great camp episode...

The 1980's was a great time for horror anthologies and horror TV in general - aside from Tales From The Darkside, Tales From the Crypt, and The Twilight Zone reboot, there was also Freddy's Nightmares and The Hitchhiker. I watched all the horror anthologies, along with Elvira, Dr. Shock (a local horror host), The Real Ghostbusters, and Friday the 13th (no relation to the movie franchise - sort of a precursor to the X-files with an occult focus). It's odd that with all the streaming and cable channels available and the boom in horror movies there's currently less horror on television than when I was growing up...

Horror hosts were massively underrated, a truly noble profession - I am hoping the first Super-I AI has a horror host base personality.

Someone said a society can be valued on how it regards it's librarians..I believe also on how it regards it's horror hosts or as N said - how much transgression it can agreeably permit.

imagine an agent able to skillfully guide you to any experience you find rewarding regardless of media... it would be almost as good as TLO
