Schalcken the Painter

Really enjoyed the 1979 adap of Schalcken the Painter. Creepy mix of horror story and art documentary. Wasn't so keen on the Dunsany adap The Pledge on the same DVD; seemed dull and heavy-handed in comparison.

It's a fantastic production. Rather than being merely exploitative, the added eroticism provides substance.

Re: Schalcken the Painter

I thought all the sex and nudity was supposed to be some sort of feminist critique but according to the accompanying booklet although some people read it that way there's a good chance that the sex was just there 'cos it was the '70s.

Re: Schalcken the Painter

Read the original Le Fanu story. Probably heresy to say this but after watching the BBC version it felt like a letdown.
