Re: Robert M. Price - Lovecraft controversy
Well, maybe jihadist extremism was in vogue during Lovecraft's lifetime (I really do not know anything about that); but it is a huge mistake (if it indeed was a mistake on Price's part) to call jihadist extremism "the real life horror of Red Hook."

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: racist anti-Muslim.
I haven't read a lot into it but I've been hearing recently about anti-Muslim hatred being or perhaps becoming similar to the average anti-Jewish hatred. That's why some might call it racist, because it's often seen to be more than just a hatred of the religion. I might be wrong about this, as I said, I haven't read enough into it.

Re: Robert M. Price - Lovecraft controversy
I think it's fair to say Lovecraft, more or less, predicted the dark rise of Death Worshiping cults; and Isis pretty much fits the bill, I fear. Colin Wilson in his introduction to the Mind Parasites was probably the first to link "The Call of Cthulhu" with the phenomena of modern day serial killers. That was way back in the late '60's.
I've always regarded "Red Hook" as a major triumph of Lovecraft's developing style. Before this current racist obsession with HPL's work, I was NOT alone.

Re: Robert M. Price - Lovecraft controversy
Well, I suppose I didn't explain exactly what I meant, but I think a thesis could be written about this kind of Cthulhu-mythos imagery in popular political discourse. I don't think I can write that thesis at present. The 'Cthulhu 4 President' is more ambiguous than the other example I gave because we're not really told what his politics are (in the other one, Yog-sothoth, or perhaps Nyarlathotep, appears to be a feminist), and it's a reasonably amusing joke. In the shadow of this image, though, Lovecraftians argue politics seemingly unaware of the ironies it highlights.
