Re: Recent Reading

I've started reading Jean Lorrain's The Soul Drinker and Other Decadent Fantasies, only one story in, but liking it so far.

"Perhaps one suffers in the tomb. There are corpses that have strange grimaces on their faces when they’re disinterred, as if they remember down there all the filth of this life." - Jean Lorrain, The Soul-Drinker

Re: Recent Reading

Having picked up a single volume comprising the complete 'Gormenghast' trilogy - for the meagre sum of £2 - I'm about a third of the way through 'Titus Groan'. My previous experience of this story was through the BBC's TV adaptation of the first two books, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the experience of reading Peake's prose; something which, as good as it was, the TV adaptation could never hope to ape.

Samuel Beckett Is Closed By Michael Coffey

Meta-everything. Essay, biography, autobiography, list, literary criticism, typographical games.
Other Coffey-stuff varies between poser, pseud and soyboy. So beware.

I knew that someday I was gonna die / And I knew before I died Two things would happen to me / That number one I would regret my entire life / And number two I would want to live my life over again.

I was wondering this too. So far, I think it can mean:
1. a man who is not masculine
2. someone who always orders soymilk (possibly out of a pretense to veganism)
3. a twink
4. an Asian person (due to frequent use of soysauce in certain Asian cuisines)

"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."

Re: Recent Reading

The use of 'soyboy' better have been ironic.

I wanted something light, but also outside my comfort zone, so I'm reading the 'autobiography' of one of my favourite wrestlers: Shawn Michaels.

Re: Recent Reading

nope, it wasn't ironic at all.

also, don't even try that with me, you know how it is. there are many ranks on TLO but forum-police or forum-prince ain't one of them, unless you're mod.

- yes there are many definition, for example, in 15th century Moravia there was shortage of food production so local Overlord or whatever, offered city-vassals opportunity to go country and start planting stuff and herding animals - with all taxes cut and with massive subventions. So they went. But only to get drunk and do nothing, free-money bro. But, they needed to actually produce something, so, they planted most useless crap, which we today use only as industrial products.
They leached, got all ####faced all day, and produced nothing whatsoever of nutritious value. So Soyboys®.

- how does it connect to Coffey-boi? He is great example of good and bad of meta-fiction writers, at worst they just leach canonical and esteemed writers, do their smirks and innuendos, mix biography and fiction, horde random crap to 200 pages and get published, no substance at all; but, if good then Samuel Beckett Is Closed or some other.

ta-dah

Nice LARP outfit.

This is my life. This is my damnation. This is my only regret--that I ever was born.
