If he is motivated by greed, wouldn't that make it even worse? I know that practice in question is becoming more and more common, by the way. One John Michael Greer, Mark's fellow in claiming some sort of spiritual enlightenment and moral superiority without any of it corresponding to his behavior, recently took his blog offline and decided to sell collected entries from said blog in a number of collected volumes.

Ohh it's not motivated by any higher motive or anything; I suspect just a way of selling individual short pieces without having to go through a middle man. Mark was planning to do a collection of essays in Ebook form at one point - I assume this is the next permutation of that.

I don't think it's a bad thing per sey but it can look a bit desperate. The Joshi ref was a nod to the making a commercial point out of one's online conflicts.

Considering he was homeless this year I'm not going to call him greedy for wanting a bit of extra cash, though maybe he has hit the big time since and is rolling in it.

Indeed, what better place to satisfy one's greed than the weird fiction community. Most of us are in it for the money, let's be honest.

Tell me about it... yesterday I was at my Author Central account on Amazon and, out of curiosity, decided to see how many copies my first weird fiction collection had sold so far this year. I saw it had sold a whopping total of 1. But then I looked up the total copies sold for my second weird fiction collection and saw that it had hit the 2 copies sold mark, so that kind of cheered me up.

If I wanted money I probably wouldn't go about it by writing ghost stories. I'd be better off doing XXX cross dressing cam shows for lonely middle aged men. It's quite a lucrative market.

Yeah, every now and then I think about maybe taking up hustling, but I think I'm starting to get past my prime for that.

Re: Mark Samuels closes blog

The numbers are quite dismal, assuming one is interested in the economic aspect of writing. I think roughly 5% of writers make enough to support themselves through writing alone. Of that 5%, the typical income is $20 - 30,000 a year, which means you'll be living a minimalist lifestyle - if you're LUCKY.

Never, ever write for money. A day job is essential.

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."

~ Clark Ashton Smith, "The Devotee of Evil"
