Re: mark samuels

As my depression intensifies, my interest in politics has lessened. I'd still take the left over the right, especially the religious right and the alt-right, but me caring or not caring seems to have the same effect on matters. The rise of populist fascism in Europe and America bothers me, but I think I'll focus more on immortal suffering than the seemingly impossible quest for transient peace.

Can't wait for Glyphotech.

I've divorced myself from politics as well. I suppose I'm a socialist from an economic perspective, i.e., I believe "value" is created by those working from the bottom rung of society. But I am partially sympathetic towards the classical liberalism embodied in those like Goethe who strongly believed in self-actualization. Needless to say, the tradition of classical liberalism in America is a downright joke.

I actually believe politics is simply a failed project in general; it's a secondary way of attempting to deal with more important issues pertaining to the human condition. The self is a narrative construct created in response to suffering. The political realm offers human beings a way to integrate their own suffering within a narrative framework which provides imaginary solutions to a more primordial pain, a form of pain which by nature eludes our grasp.

I don't believe tangible sources of human suffering that can be corrected through political action should be ignored on that basis, but I so agree that the vast majority of political solutions have failed in the long run. Why they've failed, I subscribe to the anarchist view that fundamental reform of social and economic suffering cannot occur so long as the State and Capitalism exist.

This would probably be a tentative solution as well, for pain is the innate curse of vertebrates.

This is my life. This is my damnation. This is my only regret--that I ever was born.

Re: mark samuels

Great Durrenmatt quote, Strength. Like Camus, Durrenmatt believed victory was an illusion but the fight should go on. Ligotti would regard that as lunacy; but for Durrenmatt it was the only sanity possible in a mad and monstrous world.
I'll roll with Fred.

Re: mark samuels

Sorry, but he comes off as extremely whiney, entitled and ungrateful in that post. Take a look at the number of GR ratings for his two widely accessible collections, take a look at how often he is mentioned and recommended online in relation to modern weird fiction... Compare that to other authors that have subforums on this board, short of mainstream hits like Barron.
If there was a EVUL CONSPIRACY (TM) OF EVUL LIBRULS (TM) TO STEAL JAHBS FROM GOD FEARING XTIAN WRITORS (TM) that most certainly wouldn't be the case. What more does he want, to be a mainstream bestseller with Hollywood deals himself?

Re: mark samuels

I love the bastard. My only real issue with him is how he keeps bashing TLO. It doesn't make sense to me considering most of us like him, and this is probably the online hangout that is most welcoming to him. I posted a theory once that he took Laird Barron's 'Ligotti-lite' remarks too much to heart, so is now distancing himself from Ligotti and the Ligotti community as much as possible.

Eh, I regret nothing. I called your racist posts racist then you declared me an SJW, an idiot and all sorts. Nobody has attempted to ostracise you from the community, and if it helps I shan't mention that I think you're a racist again. It really isn't a big deal to me, anyway.

Re: mark samuels

I find the short fiction of author Mark Samuels to be consistently enjoyable.

That makes me think. I would be really frigging hilarious if his entire right-wing christian fundie thing was an act whose sole purpose is to distance himself from Ligotti and, it is safe to say, largest chunk of weird fiction community. "Look at how different I am guys! Stop comparing me to that other writer, i am nothing like him!".
That would be especially hilarious if one remembers how he insinuated that Liggoti's philosophy and beliefs are nothing but a public act. Samuels is just the kind of person that is prone to project.
