Louis Marvick
Marvick, Louis - Dissonant Intervals
Generous collection of stories unsettling, disturbing, puzzling. A cyclist, traveling through the flattened terrain of the Netherlands, finds himself looking into souls in “Pockets Of Emptiness.” One scene, the road teeming with gray life, is stuck in my mind. Several works bear musical allusions. “Devil’s Music,” “The Madman Of Tosterglope,” and “Of Interactive Surveillance And The Circular Firing Squad.” Discord predominates over melody. Left handed composers and obsessed scholars. One story concerned a bombastic American turista. Yes, the breed exists, and I have witnessed examples from numerous countries. The yee-haw Texan displayed is a 50s caricature, and I couldn’t buy him. This is more than offset by “The Red Seed.” Marvick manages to spin Machen and James, yet weave his own diabolical thread into the proceedings. Again, this is a large, and sturdy, book from Sidereal Press, with several stories and novellas. This writer could receive more comment at TLO.

Re: Side Real Press
Dear all,
a few lines to say that the latest Side Real book, 'Monsieur de Bougrelon' by Jean Lorrain is now available. Its a simultaneous release with Snuggly (each edition has different contents so its worth checking their website as well) but I think its fair to say that mine is the fanciest. Its definitely the largest (and most expensive) and possibly my loveliest book to date. Details, as usual, at the Side Real website. Thanks so much! Stay well! J

Beresford Egan
Egan, Beresford - Pollen
The progress of the cultivated decadent. Cynicism takes effort. When it is unfashionable, the cynic is despised, or worse, pitied. When it becomes fashionable, the cynic becomes “mainstream” and, chances are, despises himself. Rebellion, in the long game, is highly overrated. Lancelot Daurimer, idler, stunted painter, casual spendthrift, finds himself low on resources, ambition, any sort of possibilities, actually. He “rents” rooms from Anna Beryl (Cleontine) who is older, more experienced, to be blunt, out of his league. Lance, though a reprobate, possesses the grace of the predator which, from the time of Caesar, is beguiling to women. While drawn to Cleontine, he targets Lady Marylyn, young, innocent, shielded by middle class conventionality. Targets her and decides to ruin her, to rot her from within. Pollen is a delicious, dissolute pleasure. Manners and situations feel like a cross between the fin de siècle of the 1890’s and the bankrupt carcass of the Jazz Age just before the Great Depression. Egan comes across as the bastard nephew of Oscar Wilde, and I mean that as a compliment. His wordplay is impeccable and engaging. The book is an extremely fast read, propelling the reader in a galloping rush. Additional pleasure comes from several illustrations by Mr. Egan. The most discouraging aspect of Pollen was that It was written in all of three months, which leaves me dumbfounded.

Re: Side Real Press
Heartily agree with your sentiments, Zaharoff, esp. the Oscar Wilde comparison. Coincidentally, I myself only just finished this book a few days ago.
I bought this upon release back in 2013, in my early 20s. I found it quite unreadable at the time, so poor Pollen sat there on my shelves gathering dust until now. I suppose I have the C19 lockdown to thank, in revisiting this. Could scarcely put in down this time - How tastes & perspectives change over time!

Re: Side Real Press
Dear all,
you might be interested to know that I have just posted some information regarding the upcoming Side Real Press release, 'Kokain'. 'Kokain' was a 1925 Austrian ‘modern revue’ that ran for a mere five issues before multiple prosecutions for obscenity and internal wranglings between its editors forced its closure. Newly translated by Joe E. Bandel, it includes works by, among others, Hanns Heinz Ewers (two of these previously unrecognised as such because they were published under pseudonyms), Karl Hans Strobl, Paul Leppin and Joseph Roth and is extensively illustrated by the extraordinary (and also largely forgotten) 'fantastic realist' artist Stefan Eggeler (1895-1969). Google him! The Side Real Press edition will consist of five 80 page p/b volumes printed in full colour, housed in a slipcase and limited to 250 numbered copies. More details, and an image of the books, are available via the Side Real Press website and the SRP Instagram page. Thank you. J
