Couldn't agree more - it's a lovely piece of understated design, and the translation reads like a dream. Not to be missed. I just wish CB Editions would do a follow-up.

I have "The Psychofantasy of Stefan Grabinski" in Tekeli-li! #4, 1992. The issue features works by and about Grabinski, Harry O. Morris, and someone named Thomas Ligotti. A very magazine!

"What does it mean to be alive except to court disaster and suffering at every moment?"

Tibet: Carnivals?
Ligotti: Ceremonies for initiating children into the cult of the sinister.
Tibet: Gas stations?
Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

G. S. Carnivals, I have that same issue. That was a great magazine. Too bad it went under.

Re: In search of Stefan Grabinski

I only found Tekeli-li! when I came across the Ligotti special issue a number of years ago. It was truly one of a kind, but existed at roughly the same time as several other great publications in the horror zine world. I'm thinking of stuff like Dagon, Ghosts & Scholars, Crypt of Cthulhu, etc.

I notice that weird fiction has plenty of great anthologies and collections, but you just don't see explicitly weird magazines/journals, packed with new fiction, illustrations, and scholarship, like you used to. Maybe this has something to do with the general die off in magazines at the hands of digital media going on. The semi-pro publications like Weird Tales pay occasional tribute to weird horror, but most of their issues seem more oriented toward dark fantasy, sci-fi, and more commercially appealing speculative literature. Other horror magazines shun the weird in favor of the latest zombie tale or big name author.

I understand that the Tekeli-li like journal of strange stories and observations may be gone for good, and for very legitimate reasons, but I still lament its passing.

I think you're very much onto something here. The publishing woes we've been facing over the last decade has really taken its toll on the journals. We still have Wormwood, of course, which may be the last weird academic journal out there, and some fiction-only journals like Supernatural Tales and Shadows & Tall Trees, but even those don't really embrace the weird ethos. I suspect most of the work is being done in other places, or provided free on the internet (such as Yellowish Haze's investigations on Mark Z Danielewski).

Perhaps some enterprising soul will take advantage of the recent strides in electronic publishing to put together an electronic journal devoted to the weird, filled with fiction and articles. I certainly think something like that would fly, if done right. Perhaps some of our members here would like to do so? It's only hours and hours of work for no pay, after all.

Re: In search of Stefan Grabinski

I don't know if people have seen this yet but there has been an announcement on the Grabinski Facebook page about a prospective publication of his fourth (named) collection of short stories, The Book of Fire.

Grabinski's The Book of Fire on the horizon? I've been in communication with a new publisher od weird fiction and we've reached a preliminary agreement on the publication of The Book of Fire, to occure possibly some time late 2011.
More details to follow hopefully.

Excellent. I notice Grabinski fan art is slowly on the rise too. Here's a couple reported on the same Facebook site, inspired by The Book of Fire and The Red Magda:
