Re: Neglected/Underrated Writers

I still think that the young Illinois poet Robert Nelson, who either died of a 17 day illness in his 'twenties or committed suicide at age 17, is appallingly underrated. If not for his premature death he would have become one with that hallowed pantheon of precocious weird writers and poets alongside Lovecraft, Wandrei, and Smith. Our dear Miss. Pugmire wrote an exquisite prose-poem dedicated to this tragic yet promising poet of sable visions:
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct...88198703,d.d2s

This is also a fine prose-poem from Charles D. O'Connor III in Spectral Realms No. 2:

Young pilgrim, curious to extract the marrow from lovely and cryptic thoughts penned by souls long ago, and eager to let them copulate with thy heart, come hither. Let me fling the rusty doors wide, and lead thee down stained stairs into a musty, forgotten sepulchre mouth hidden behind rotten leaves in a damned necropolis. Here reposes the body of an innocent youth named Robert Nelson, whom the living selfishly branded a minor poet. Somewhere inside lies a worm-riddled book of his lovely, dark rhymes. Let us sit on a crumbling casket and read them, while sampling wines of the finest vintage. We have time, nothing but eternity lies ahead.

I believe in the power of the imagination to remake the world, to release the truth within us, to hold back the night, to transcend death, to charm motorways, to ingratiate ourselves with birds, to enlist the confidences of madmen.
-- J.G. Ballard

I just looked up Hjortsberg to see if he has written anything recently and came up with this: Jubilee Hitchhiker: The Life and Times of Richard Brautigan. It's a biography of the author who he apparently knew very well. I doubt if I will read it due to its length of 864 pages (!) but it put me in mind of an odd "horror" book that I read and enjoyed quite a while ago, The Hawkline Monster.

It is short, quirky, and very funny. Typical Brautigan. It has a couple of monsters too.

Re: Neglected/Underrated Writers

I don't know if anyone's mentioned him on any prior threads, but definitely James Hynes, who's written some novels and short stories that could be described as "academic horror" or horror stories set in academia. Very biting satires on the whole postmodernism con. He wrote two novels The Lecturer's Tale and Kings of Infinite Space, on those themes, and a short story collection, Publish or Perish. Following those he wrote a novel based off the Sept. 11 attacks and then seems to have disappeared altogether.

Carlos Díaz Dufoo (12/4/1861 - 9/5/1941)

A very underrated mexican writer even in his own country.

Re: Neglected/Underrated Writers

To be neglected and underrated is perhaps not quite the same? Most underrated writers I can think of are rather famous/infamous whereas the few neglected writers I can think of were never rated in the first place.

Leopoldo Lugones, I think.

Well, at least outside of Latin America. He really paved the way for Borges.

His book of weird tales Strange Forces is marvellous.

And before I forget, also, Horacio Quiroga (a Uruguayan) one of whose hideously eerie tales I translated from the Spanish.
