Re: Favourite ghost story writers and stories?

Hmmmm well I like many of M.R James' stories. Ramsey Campbell has allso so written some topnotch ghost stuff though it might not be to everyone's taste. I agree with you about Edith Nesbit, her stories are very much underrated in my opinion. Recently I've been reading Andrew Caldecott's Not Exactly Ghosts/Fires Burn Blue collections which contain some good stories set in tropical climes.

A lot of people I know reckon Fritz Leiber very highly though sadly I have not been unable to find much of his stuff (Apparantly Midnight House published their Leiber collections on solid gold sheets)

As for individual tales I would put forward Doyle's Lot. 249. Technicaly its not about a ghost but I assume it still counts.

The Wordsworth-Editions have some great anthologies out at present.

Of interest to beginners, perhaps, but not to people who've been reading in the genre for a few years (or indeed to collectors who want books that won't fall apart after a couple of readings).

I'm sure that Mark Valentine is a very pleasant fellow and all that, but it is quite amusing that the creator of 'The Connoisseur' should edit such cheaply made books. It's rather like having Brian Sewell endorse those ghastly plates depicting syrupy pictures of fluffy kittens you see on the rear page of the Radio Times.

Re: Favourite ghost story writers and stories?

Well, ive been reading ghost stories for over 35 years and I can tell you they are excellent editions to the genre.
Some of the stories have never appeared in anthologies before.

A wonderful series of books!

They are indeed. I've got a number of them myself (my favourite being the F.Marion Crawford one) and I must say that I've enjoyed them all immensely. And upto press, they've all held together o.k.

Yes,anyone who appreciates and knows how to open and read a book correctly will gets decades of use out of these.
I have some astronomy paperbacks that were published in 1952 and they"re still going strong.
They used to call the Andromeda galaxy a "nebulae" in those days!

Re: Favourite ghost story writers and stories?

I'm afraid that there is something in the what Karswell regarding the quality. The collections themselfs are great ways to get some of the relatively more uncommon ghost story collections out there. (Take the Caldecott collection for instance. Plus the introductions are usualy snappy and interesting) Unfortunately the paper seems to degrade fairly quickly and the print loses its clarity.
