Tartarus is re-issuing Valentine and Howard's collection Secret Europe as a signed, limited edition and an e-book.

Noonday Stars: a blog about horror fiction. Recent content includes essay on the new edition of Ligotti's The Agonizing Resurrection of Victor Frankenstein and Other Gothic Tales.

Re: Mark Valentine (and John Howard)

Excellent, excellent news; despite supposedly winning a copy at one point and later on ordering another, I had pretty much given up all hope of being able to read this in the near future. You have my sincerest thanks, Tartarus !

Re: Mark Valentine (and John Howard)

Got it today. It's a honey!

I would love to spend a week "down the shore" whiling away the afternoons, relishing every story, stretched out on a comfortable sofa located on a shady front porch.

Lucian pigeon-holed the letter solemnly in the receptacle lettered 'Barbarians.' ~ The Hill of Dreams by Arthur Machen

Re: Mark Valentine (and John Howard)

This morning I finished the collection Secret Europe by Valentine and Howard.

Overall, I enjoyed it. I can earnestly say that the vision of this collection is very unique. Fiction concerning singular moments in the lives of people across Europe, primarily taking place across Europe in unlikely places before and during the chaos of WWI and WWII.

Most stories are essentially historical fiction, though sometimes we are shown glimpses of subtle evidence of the weird and supernatural as through a veil momentarily pulled back (and these are my favorites) - stories such as "Baltersan's Third Edition", "The Other Salt", "The Lion of Chaldea", etc.

Some stories I felt like I needed to have a greater interest and knowledge of Europe's history and politics to fully enjoy and to realize the depths of Mr. Howard and Mr. Valentine's literature. But still, despite my rudimentary knowledge of the finer details of Europe's history, I found much to admire of their intelligent, sublime craft.
