God of Foulness

Matt, cheers for pointing me towards this site. I've told you before how much I enjoyed The God of Foulness and I was wondering if, after the success of the limited edition hardcover, there had been any further progress in getting it reprinted in a format that was likely to reach a wider readership.

Re: God of Foulness

Hey, Stu. I'm really glad you've decided to drop by here and check out the site.

No, I haven't found a publisher for The God of Foulness, but I did talk on the phone just last week with a small press publisher about the possibility of his publishing a new collection of my work, and he responded with extreme enthusiasm. So at this point it looks like a tentative but fairly solid plan. And The God of Foulness will be among the contents. The new book won't appear until late 2006 or early 2007 at the very earliest, owing both to this particular company's current publication schedule and the fact that some of the stories I want to appear in it are already promised out to anthologies and/or their rights haven't reverted back to me yet.

Many thanks for posting your interview with me. I was disappointed when Mike took over and then shut down Terror Tales (or rather converted it to a site for his own personal promotion).

Hi all! I love Matt's "God of Foulness" very much. It's a wonderful story, and I hope there will be the new collection you talked about, Matt! Good luck!

Re: God of Foulness

Hey Matt, what's up? i've only read your essays in the Ligotti Reader, but have heard really good things about you. i take it that God of Foulness is out of print or no longer available?

i took a look at Ash-tree where your Divinations of the Deep is for sale. i felt like i was trying to buy some weird drug off a blackmarketeer. have you ever thought about using a print on demand service for self-publishing like Lulu.com? i used that for my paper and pencil role-playing game, Empire of Satanis , which i didn't have a satanic prayer in Hell of finding a publisher for since it was basically rooted in Lovecraft/Ligotti and very unlike D&D...

just seems to me that you could keep all your stuff in print, make it easier to get ahold of, and maybe even turn a small profit. although, i have no idea what kind of royalty rate you get with Ash-Tree or Delirium? not that i work for Lulu, but you can set your own royalty, book length and format, offer a preview of the contents (that would be really cool for people like me who have never read your stuff), and it takes about 5 min. to upload and have your writing available... rather than a year or two.

in any case, i will try to get my hands on your work and see what it's like.

thanks, D

Thanks for the interest, Unknown and Darrick.

In answer to Unknown's mild threat, I promise you that if the new collection indeed ends up being published by the company that I spoke with last week, it will be readily available everywhere, since they're one of the most prominent small press horror publishers in the business.

Darrick -- THE GOD OF FOULNESS was originally published last year as book 5 in a 6-book limited edition series from Delirium Books titled Dark Homage: Lovecraft. In this case, "limited edition" meant really limited: only 100 copies were published, and they were sold out in preorders. Before that, the story was briefly available online at the now-defunct website Terror Tales. I think you can still find a few copies of the Dark Homage books floating around on the Web, but they may be expensive.

Thanks for your suggestion regarding self-publishing. At one point several years back I briefly considered this, but then several established publishers expressed interest in my work, and these days I'd definitely much rather go the traditional route.

I do wish you the best of luck with your EMPIRE OF SATANIS game. Some years ago I was really into gaming, and probably would have revelled in your product. As it stands now, I can tell you that I'm impressed with the amount of work you've put into it (I skimmed it a few days ago when you made the link available to its content) and that I hope it does very well for you.

Re: God of Foulness

Oh -- and I'm happy to email a manuscript copy of THE GOD OF FOULNESS to you if you're interested. (I do hope this won't encourage you not to buy the actual short story collection when it appears, though.)

I would still buy it, definitely. I'd rather read it in paper form and not on the screen
