Those who've been on the internet since the frontier days of the early 1990s have had to learn not only the new technology, but all the inter-personal protocols. It's been fascinating, and it'll be interesting to see how much more it all develops and changes in the future.

But, as in the real world, the majority of people on the net are entirely reasonable human beings.

Indeed, I find it wonderful to mix on TLO and elsewhere with people I would not have otherwise known at all. Not to truly know their griefs, passions, illnesses, joys that you often do know about when with people face to face but simply to know them from what they choose to impart on the internet is a bonus, a bonus I could not have imagined from the time when I was small in the Fifties till I suddenly realised that one could tap into a greater universe of humanity during the Nineties.

I just got it on my Kindle a couple of days ago. It's up there on my list. I loved the White Hands and Other Weird Tales. So I'll get to it soon. Reading Despair by Nabokov at the moment.

mark, absolutely loved this collection, as i did the others. there are few who can match you imo.

exoccidente, though, is a nightmare. he literally pretends to send you books and doesnt (i know this as hes said hes sent books that he hadnt even published yet, and still hasnt, saying they must have been lost in the post, ie the 'forthcoming' reggie oliver novel, which he said hed sent in 2009!). ive got an ongoing order for three books with him since 2009 and im still waiting for one of them. sadly, despite my preordering machen months before its release, it didnt arrive, i got the recently released paperback). the books are very nice when they do arrive, however. dan even promised to send me cinbars gnosis gratis for all the hassle, then conveniently forget and would not reply to any emails. indeed, it seems to take around 10 emails and much imploring to get any kind of reply about books youve paid for in advance. when i first made my order there was no indication they were preorders, they appeared to be published, and here i am two-plus years on still waiting. hey-ho. as vonnegut says, 'so it goes…'.

I've had the same problem with ExOccidente (that was for The Man Who Collected Machen and All God's Angels Beware!). It took me a lot of emails (some answered, some not...) over a lot of months, but in the end the books arrived in all their glory! So, do not despair!

In a way, that's better this way. This mixed experience put me off spending all my money trying to get every ExO book. Because Dan may have a problem in following up his orders, but, man, he has a flawless taste in the choice of his authors and his books are simply gorgeous!

Oh, did I mention that The Man Who Collected Machen is yet another proof that Mark Samuels is very talented indeed in his craft? Now I have. An instant classic, as was The White Hand...

All this kindness and good-will drives me on to finish the Ligotti tribute story I'm trying to thrash out for Joe Pulver's anthology. I can't think of a much more significant endeavour than paying homage to an author whose work we all here at TLO admire and who is, imo, the greatest living author of horrific weird fiction.
