Near the end of a recent blog post, Jeff VanderMeer made brief mention of working on an introduction to a forthcoming Ligotti reprint for Penguin Classics. Exciting!

How long does it generally take for a book to be allowed into the classics line? I assume the Morrissey book was a jokey exception.

Re: Is A Penguin Classics Ligotti Reprint Forthcoming?

This news has me ecstatic! I have a passion for Penguin Classic editions, and I shall be overjoy'd to place my Ligotti Penguin next to my CAS and HPL and Poe editions! How wonderful that I am still able to swoon at such exciting news!

"We work in the dark -- we do what we can -- we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art."

That depends... for instance, Javier Marias' All Souls was originally published in 1988 and in translation in 1989. Vineland by Pynchon is there, too. Others take a longer time. So it's not out of the question for sa writer like Ligotti to be there. There are differences between Penguin US and UK as well, I'd guess.

However, does anyone know whether this is a full collection or rather a reprint of one story in an anthology? They have a horror series in the US, but an anthology of stories - probably to cash in on True Detective - would seem to me to be the most plausible guess until we know more.

Re: Is A Penguin Classics Ligotti Reprint Forthcoming?

Pure speculation but I believe it will be either Songs of a Dead Dreamer or Teatro Grottesco.

Re: Is A Penguin Classics Ligotti Reprint Forthcoming?

Very briefly: the details have not been made final, and an official announcement will be forthcoming once they are.

On a personal level, I've been walking on air about this news ever since I heard about its probability. Exciting times ahead!

"Thomas Ligotti is a master of a different order, practically a different species. He probably couldn’t fake it if he tried, and he never tries. He writes like horror incarnate.”

Re: Is A Penguin Classics Ligotti Reprint Forthcoming?

''If Ligotti ever appears on the bestseller list, it will be an aberration more bizarre than anything depicted in his tales.''
-- American Supernatural Tales, S.T. Joshi.

I would never have thought that, save for the quoted anthology above, Penguin Classics would be publishing Ligotti, except for mayhap fifty years later; but I have always seen his name in Penguin Modern Classics, standing alongside the likes of Camus, Bataille, and Borges.

I believe in the power of the imagination to remake the world, to release the truth within us, to hold back the night, to transcend death, to charm motorways, to ingratiate ourselves with birds, to enlist the confidences of madmen.
-- J.G. Ballard

Re: Is A Penguin Classics Ligotti Reprint Forthcoming?

A friend has suggested to me that Tom's being linked to TRUE DETECTIVE is probably the reason that Penguin was interested in publishing an edition of his work. I don't want to believe that, and hope that they are doing so because they realise Thomas Ligotti is weird fiction's greatest living author. I wonder what texts will be used, as I believe Tom revised his stories for the Subterranean editions.

"We work in the dark -- we do what we can -- we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art."
