Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations

I thought I'd post Luna Sea because Devil Doll are apparently really popular in Japan. Devil Doll is almost more Japanese in some sense in terms of their genre. Very Italian.. like Goblin and stuff.. but it tends to be the Japanese bands that are like them today, and nothing much I've heard from Europe besides Sopor , which is a lot like them.

This is more.. metal.. ish. The cute girl shredding is a cross-dressing guy. So don't be attracted!

J Rock cursed… A genre full of dead musicians parting under mysterious circumstances…

This is my favourite song by Devil Doll.

“Human life moves in only one direction - toward disease, damage, and death” Thomas Ligotti

"I wish I were a cannibal – less for the pleasure of eating someone than for the pleasure of vomiting him" E.M. Cioran

“It would be wrong to refuse to face the fact that everything is fundamentally sick and sad.”Thomas Bernhard

Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations

The craziest thing about that band is the amount of time it takes to sink in that they're not sampling. I've heard from people who are deeply knowledgeable about music say that he's often taking inspiration from various famous musicians, then changing it some way, but all the music is made recorded by the band. The pipe organ is a pipe organist. The accordion is played by Mr Doctor the vocalist composer himself. A lot of bands trying to do what they were doing are sampling. That's probably the craziest thing about their music.

My favourite j rock musician,

Bubble Economy!

So Expensive. So sound.

Older Luna Sea stuff. I know this is more goth rock but they kind of out-goth all other goth music and they probably out-metal all other goth metal in the same stroke.

Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations

I don't think there's anything awful about Devil Doll but I fully understand why people would find them ridiculous. But I think Sacrilegium and Dies Irae are some of the greatest music I've ever heard. My Devil Doll phase was pure magic. I'd put them alongside any great band; I love them just as much as Slowdive, Swans, Lycia, Trance To The Sun, Beach Boys, Yes, Emperor, early Jacula/Antonius Rex and early Red House Painters.

I'd describe it as Peter Hammill possessed by the ghost of the actor Dwight Frye in a symphonic prog/classical journey into the aesthetic of old gothic and expressionist horror films.

I saw an interview with one of his bandmates and even he doesn't know where Mr Doctor gets the money for those orchestras and choirs. Apparently he has one of the biggest record collections in Italy.
I pray that they release more music someday because he said that he still records albums for his own pleasure. But that could just be a falsehood to cultivate the mysterious image of the band.

Yeah for anyone interested in weird bands, this is the weird band to end all weird bands.

He's actually since given out his real name (people apparently know who he is). Besides this, he wrote a massive door stop book on punk music called 45 Revolutions .

Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations

One of the weirdest and most gut level depressing metal albums I've heard is "Agents of Oblivion". It was a tribute from the guys in Acid Bath to one of their band members who died. It also at times sounds like a Doors album.

“The real reason why so few men believe in God is that they have ceased to believe that even a God can love them.”
― Thomas Merton, No Man Is an Island

Re: Off the radar metal album recommendations

Buck-Tick is probably the closest thing I ever heard to David Bowie. like a Japanese David Bowie crossed with Mr. Doctor from Devil Doll.
