I feel like there was a point in American history when most people were able to afford the basic necessities of life, which in turn provided a foundation upon which most people were able to purchase extra "stuff" that wasn't essential. The pursuit of "stuff" essentially ate away at said foundation, i.e., no one could afford superfluous goods except for a lazy aristocratic elite.

Life sucks. We were never meant to be here and enjoy "stuff." Human history itself is a strong testament to that. A lot of our economic problems arise, I believe, from a sort of universal greed sustained by an optimistic as well as hedonistic attitude regarding life. If people were more pessimistic about the pursuit of pleasure and the illusory nature of happiness, we would probably forgo a great deal of "stuff." It's not just CEOs and government bureaucrats who are guilty - it's absolutely everyone.

It's base materialism.

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."

He's currently staying with me, in exile in the nether regions where London becomes Kent, sleeping on an inflatable bed, has beaten me twice at chess and has forced me to watch the Universal Studios version of The Black Cat ("suggested by" the tale by Edgar A. Poe) -- hence my new avatar.

As long as you had the same musical soundtrack, it sounds like good clean fun at the Crisp flat.

Seriously sorry about the homeless situation and grateful for your compassion, both on Mark's behalf.

Re: A Pilgrim Stranger

The Black Cat has about as much to do with Poe as Die Hard 2, and the plot structure is baffling, but it's a quietly surreal mood piece with a striking atmosphere. My favourite of their collaborations.

Re: A Pilgrim Stranger

I imagine Mark Samuels being something like Edward Gorey's Doubtful Guest:

It joined them at breakfast and presently ate
All the syrup and toast and part of a plate.

It was subject to fits of bewildering wrath,
During which it would hide all the towels from the bath.

Every Sunday it brooded and lay on the floor,
Inconveniently close to the drawing-room door.

And so forth.

Re: A Pilgrim Stranger

Didn't realise people were referring to the monster as "Frankenstein" as far back as that trailer.
