Re: Trump

I know what you're saying, Brendan, but at the same time let me say I've never met an anti-Semite who didn't hate Israel as well.
Trump may be petty and reactive but I'd be amazed if he were an anti-Semite.

Some apparently want to accuse this guy of every nastiness in the book without providing plausible evidence.

Re: Trump

I have definitely met anti-Semites who support the Isreali government.

By the same token, most of the people I know who don't support the Israeli government are not anti-Semites. Though, to be sure, some are. I don't know if Trump is an anti-Semite or not.

His chief advisor, Steve Bannon, however, appears to be.

And whether Trump is or not makes little difference. He is a racist, in the full sense of the word. His whole campaign was based on racism. So, if he doesnt hate Jews, but just other minorities - I can't really see much difference. Racism is racism. And though Muslims are not a race, his crazy anti-Muslim rhetoric shows that he is a complete bigot.

I don't think it is a question of accusing. He stood up in front of huge crowds and spouted racist, bigoted rhetoric. He definitely incited his supporters to push and punch African Americans. "Get 'em out of here!"

So, my feeling is this:

1. Trump is a racist

2. Not all of his supporters are racists

3. Everyone who voted for Trump, voted for, and supported a racist

Anyone who supports him now, supports a racist.

Re: Trump

Trump's victory, helped by Brexit, has generally been considered as encouraging the right wing (for want of a better term) agenda.
Depending on the outcome (if eventual disrepute), Trump and Brexit may instil the opposite effect, do you think?

I dare to view the contemporary weird lit, both the authors and their readers, as one eminently progressive bunch and it would be great if those who are more transgressive and rebellious that any other genre fiction scene led the way, because we need such acts of bravery and rebellion now. Thank you in advance.
As much as I appreciate action against Trump, I doubt such an anthology would be especially good. Call me an escapist but I really don't want to read about him in fiction and I imagine the stories would probably be tedious handwringing. I think if you were going to do something like that, the best thing would be an anthology generally against showy populists, nationalism, racism, fascism and all these unpleasant trends rising all over the world right now.
Bolded is what I was hoping for, I am sorry if it looked as if I meant an anthology specifically themed around our president elect, ie his person.

That Resist and Refuse project is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to see. Props to people from Dim Shores for doing something like this, and I hope that we'll see some contributions from writers posting on this forum too. Many of us need some hope and support now, even in darkness.

I'll delete them ab initio as threadstarter if the consensus of members is for that to happen.*
My own view is that this thread has been constructive and thought-provoking, but not 'provocative' in the gratuitous sense.

PS: *or if Dr Locrian thinks at any future stage that should happen.

In fact I have now deleted, as its threadstarter, the very short Brexit one.

This was my first post on it, just for the record:

"Arguments are powerful in whatever direction your beliefs take.
But my main point is that a cataclysmic decision about Britain's and Europe's, even the world's, future to be based on the lies and stupidities of the Referendum campaign (from both sides) - and for we the public to be expected to transcend such a hyper-complex farrago - is ludicrous."

This thread is the only civil one I've encountered on politics so far - at least from what I've seen.

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."

Japan’s New Fascism | National Review

Just posting something I put on the brexit thread.

It seems too absurd to be voted for but just the fact that this referendum will even happen is frightening.
