Re: Anyone up for the hippity hops?
Nirvana In Karma, I thought the Nicki Minaj verse in "Monster" was one of the best parts of the song, but to each their own! I really should go back and give a listen to some of Kanye's other albums he's done, the only CD of his I own is Yeezus which I greatly enjoyed.
Jeff Coleman, I was the first person in my family to purchase a rap album, ha ha. It was Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet. I can't say I listen to much hip-hop but when writing Harlem Smoke I did listen to a lot of horrorcore groups from the 90's, such as Gravediggaz, Flatlinerz, Esham, Geto Boys, and (especially) Insane Poetry, whose Grim Reality album was a big sonic inspiration. I especially enjoyed this track off it: |

Re: Anyone up for the hippity hops?
I'm not as into the second one, but it's still really good. Killer Mike and El-P are both geniuses, especially El-P's work with Company Flow. My trajectory here was pretty similar, I went maybe 10 years dismissing a lot of the rhymes I listened to early on, in favor of metal/indie/punk/experimental bands. Then I started revisiting it and found that not only did it hold up much better than most of the music I'd subsequently listened to, but that I'd vastly underestimated how complex and good a lot of it was. Definitely Dre and Biggie, but also Cypress Hill: Listened to them constantly as a child but didn't really appreciate how good they were until coming back to them as an adult. Pretty much all the major 90s figures put out some incredible albums that I'm sure people will be coming back to for a long time to come.

Ka. I can't speak for that type of life/culture as I was raised within the upper-middle class plasticity, but his style and words capture senses of regret, desperation and introspection within that sphere that I really haven't heard in anything else thus far.
I love Death Grips, but I really miss Ride's more poetic side: While I guess more soul that hip-hop, I ####ing love these ladies: Finally, I think Filthy Frank does some pretty awesome stuff with his Pink Guy character, even though it's comedic at heart. Dude is insanely talented, in my opinion. Huge fan of Flying Lotus, Captain Murphy, MF Doom, Tyler, Run the Jewels. I used to be crazy into the cash money bull#### back in the day. I still listen to Triple-6 every now and again.

I've noticed that this forum automatically censors certain words, so maybe I should offer a "trigger warning", as this music video contains footage of junkies getting high and one convulsing.

In terms of intensity, this leaves much of the efforts of the later horrorcore crowd in the dust; at times the MC seems to be channeling Patrick Bateman.
