Unless this is a joke, it’s a damned shame that someone not brought up all his life with the cut and thrust of a cyber-world’s potential misunderstanding and battle is inveigled into such a self-destructive stance as this possible posture or deep sincerity.

I believe that if one reads the blog post in question, it is clearly intended to be a joke, especially as he goes on to mention the "small matter" of the 35 or so books that he has forthcoming over the next 3 years.

Apparently this was an attempt at a satirical response to some comments that he received about "shutting up and going away." Not defending his biting comments about other authors, but in this case it appears that it was indeed an attempt at humor.

Des, I think you can rest easy. That post seems pretty evidently satirical. He lists "thirty-five books of [his] that are forthcoming". And then spends the rest of the post talking about how devastated he expects all his critics to be by his exceptional output.

Also, is it weird that he calls them "his" books when he isn't the author of virtually any of them? I think editorship is a noble endeavor, particularly as the curator for new anthologies, where there's frequently a vision being shaped that borders on authorial. But most of those titles listed in the blog post seem to be single-author collections. I can't imagine a museum curator hanging "Starry Night" and referring to it as "his painting".

Anyhoot, there are definitely some titles there that have piqued my curiosity. I wish Hippocampus were more consistent in which books it published digitally...
