Abbas Kiarostami's Taste of Cherry is a good Persian film with a melancholic atmosphere.
I quite like Kiarostami's films, but have not viewed this one yet.
Look forward to your comments.

Two I can recommend:

Like Someone In Love, set in Tokyo, the relationship between an elderly man and young call girl,
is beautifully composed with a tension that tightens throughout.

Copie Conforme is my favorite, however.
A subtle flow of misdirection and shadow playing.
Early on, I became lost - which I suspect was deliberate on Kiarostami's part.
Talky film, yet the characters are articulate and intelligent, a rare combination in movies nowadays.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I think you owe it to yourself to check out Taste of Cherry, Zaharoff. I edited my post with my thoughts on the film. Don't let Roger Ebert's negative review deter you from watching it because Akira Kurosawa and Haneke reportedly loved it.

I have recently finished watching Robert Bresson's The Devil, Probably. Before this, I've only seen his Au Hasard Balthazar, but I'm planning to watch his other films such as Mouchette, L'Argent, and so forth.

The Devil, Probably is quite a difficult film to dissect, but I feel, in short, it's about the insufficiency of trying to grasp a conclusive answer via instant gratification (e.g., the womanizing of Charles) and institutions (e.g., the scenes with the leftist organization, psychoanalyst, priest, and so forth). The main character, Charles, starts as an environmental activist, seeing the large-scale devastation occurring across the world on the projector during his meetings, and this leads to a desire for a meaning in a decaying world. In a sense, I find this film a criticism of Camus' philosophy in The Myth of Sisyphus in that one's constructed meaning is doomed to be shown as inadequate, and this is what Charles' suicide signified in the end.

I felt Bresson's signature use of non-actors, leading to wooden acting, enhanced the morbidity of the film's conclusion.

Not to go off on a tangent, but one thing that struck me was how much the world was being destroyed by oceanic and air pollutants, non-biodegradable waste, deforestation, and so forth in 1977, but now, in 2017, I think we're dealing with these issues on a larger magnitude now, especially with ocean acidification and Fukushima spill. Looking at photos or videos of the damage being done does induce some pain.

Regardless, The Devil, Probably and Taste of Cherry complement each other well.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I saw Alien: Covenant today; it was pretty good, especially when compared to Prometheus.

A couple of prequel shorts:

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I hate to be a Debbie downer but I saw Covenant last night and it was borderline awful. The Alien franchise is dear to me and what Scott did with Covenant left me confused, empty and sad. The movie starts way too soon and moves way too fast, there isn't a single, meaningfully developed character in the entire movie aside from David, the crew continues to make inanely idiotic decisions, the xenomorph lore was completely ruined to the point of stripping away the horror they presented previously, more canon-altering questions are posed with no insights given into their meaning or intent, and the movie ultimately feels flat, hollow, hasty, frayed and confused. It makes me wonder if Scott himself still holds his original identity for the xenomorphs and the universe in general, because Covenant unravels things in such confusing and silly ways that betray the previous films. I would almost go so far as to say it's insulting, but I'm a huge Alien nerd.

I liked Prometheus better, because even with it's numerous flaws it posed compelling questions about the universe while not destroying it, and it at least made me excited about what was to come from the franchise. Covenant makes me hesitant.

Fassbender was incredible, though. It was very much his movie. The opening scene is probably the best in the entire movie. Joking, sorta.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I liked Prometheus and wish we got the expanded sequel rather than a mediocre Alien movie that got rid of all the mystery and suspense.

Re: Movie Recommendations

It's fine, but I liked Drive fine too. I thought Only God Forgives was pretty bad. Valhalla Rising is my favourite I've seen by him. Drive and Neon Demon are best viewed as exercises in style but Valhalla Rising is pleasingly atmospheric.

Re: Movie Recommendations

Only thing I can say about Covenant is that they can freely erase that "Alien" from its title. Scott and co managed to eliminate everything "alien" from 'morphs.
