However, what is particularly worrisome with Trump, as Sam Harris and others have pointed out, is that he has the intellectual sophistication and emotional maturity of an eight-year-old. I'm sympathetic to the Antinatalists, and to those who would like to see this sorry world enveloped in a giant mushroom cloud--even if I'm not quite there myself. Yet for anyone who actually cares about the future survival of the human race, the fact that Donald Trump is now in charge of the nuclear codes, has to be the single most momentous fact of the past 10,000 years. As I said, I agree that people like McCain and Clinton represent a potential danger to world peace, but I just don't see them as rising to the same level of threat as Trump. Time will tell, but unlike either McCain or Clinton, I fear that Trump has zero ability to finesse his way out of a tricky international situation. (Imagine, for example, if Trump had been president during the Cuban Missile Crisis. What are the odds of a happy ending in that scenario?) And who knows? Trump might get so fed up with all this Russian stuff that he'll get us into a nuclear war with North Korea just to get the attention off of himself. I actually think this is somewhat realistic. And unless there is some kind of benevolent Providence watching over us, I think that the chances of something like this happening are greater than they have ever been before.

Re: Trump

Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia will be judged a great success. He's brought billions of dollars to his country and the promise of many future jobs in the Defense Industry. A lot will hinge on his speech tomorrow. Despite my own misgivings about the Saudis, Trump seems to have pulled it off.

Trump is a more personally repellent individual but I think he has at least to start a couple of ad hoc wars to catch up with Bush. Admittedly launching a nuclear strike against North Korea in retaliation for Sarin attacks in Syria would have put him right up there.

Re: Trump

Morko, I can't be concerned about Trump's "honor". I'm only concerned about his ability to live up to his major promises. Only three of them matter to me.

Evans is right. Bush was actually a likable guy. Alas, he had more blood on his hands than Vlad the Impaler.

Re: Trump

Iran and Saudi Arabia both have a history of sponsoring terrorism. Let Trump play his game. I'll judge it by the outcome.

Trump's speech tomorrow is going to be important. He better pull it off.

Bush was sworn in the same year as 9/11 and given terrible manipulated intelligence about it. Trump is being a chaotic car crash mess for no reason during a period of relative stability. I'd say that's worse. Pray forbid we have to endure Trump's response to a large terrorist attack on the US.

Yeah, now is the time to buck the trend of a lifetime of bad public speaking.

Re: Trump

Trump doesn't want another Mideast War but he's playing a game here--I'd bet on it-- and I hope he's confident in his actions. Time will tell, for better or worse.

But I don't believe a war between Saudi Arabia and Iran is coming. That would be nuts for both sides.

I take that bet whole heartedly. Shall we say.... a billion dollars? I don't think Trump has any idea what he is doing or what the consequences of any of his actions are.

Re: Trump

Seriously, James, this was/is "a period of relative stability" in the world?

Well, maybe if we forget Russia's new Cold War (thanks to the last admin),NK's paranoid and continued aggression (thanks to the last admin for just ignoring it. Going to be a bit harder to do when NK has its long-range beauties) and, let's see, China in the South Seas, The Mideast in Chaos (thanks to the 16 year intervention of bad American policies) and...and...
Do I really need to go on?
Didn't think so.

It's like The Resistance. The thing about The Resistance is they never let the facts get in the way of their hate.
