Re: Movie Recommendations

After reading some glowing reviews that hailed it as a return to form for John Carpenter, I decided to watch Cigarette Burns, an episode of Masters of Horror.

My conclusion is that those critics reviewed a different episode than the one I watched, since it was a disaster on many levels.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Movie Recommendations

Have you seen the other Masters of Horror episodes? Most are really bad. Probably why it's so praised.

I thought it was fair. The best of the series, along with Miike's Imprint, which didn't even air. Argento's Jenifer was watchable, but still not terribly good considering it came from the talent behind Suspiria and Profondo Rosso.

Re: Movie Recommendations

There was a follow-up show called Fear Itself, which could be treated as the third season.

I really liked parts of "Imprint" but I wasn't impressed by any of the other few I seen. Though there was some amazing "how did they do that?" special effects.

Re: Movie Recommendations

Although Carpenter's MoH episodes and Ward have been disappointing for many (I haven't seen them) it's been nice that his recent music has been very well received.

I also watched The Dreams in the Witch-House by Stuart Gordon; it was bad, but a little bit better that Cigarette Burns.

Masters of Horror seemed like a great idea on paper, but it is so disappointing to learn that the results were pretty dreadful. I like to put the blame for this on Mick Garris, who can't direct his way out of a paper bag.

I will probably check Imprint by Takashi Miike out, though.

Re: Movie Recommendations

Keep in mind that a lot of these directors were well past their prime anyway.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I went to see Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

I really do not know why people keep expecting anything good from Luc Besson, despite the cool visuals. Oh, and Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne look like siblings; she is one of the worst actresses to ever disgrace the silver screen.

Re: Movie Recommendations

Seeing how many discs I could give to the charity shop and was surprised to find I could get rid of another 80. Looking at each film and realising that quality sometimes has little to do with which ones I want to hold onto.
Quite a number of very strong films that I just know I'll never rewatch and some awful films I'll keep because I like an actress or a setting or a scene.

Thinking about the Glasgow Film Theatre in which I saw Villainess. I fear their selection is narrowing or changing but I haven't paid close enough attention to see if there's really been any decline. It has been the go-to place whenever we couldn't see a new film in the bigger cinemas.
I saw Inland Empire, Treacle Jr, Dance Of Reality, Duke Of Burgundy, Headshot, Tale Of Tales and I Am Not Your Negro there. That's a pretty strong bunch.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I saw The Believer last night on a streaming service, it's very good. Ryan Gosling as a secretly Jewish neo-Nazi.

Re: Movie Recommendations

A Werner Herzog documentary:

"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."
