The Big Screen vs The Small Screen

Going to the cinema seems like a pointless gamble considering how awful the general public are. I'm fine watching all my movies (generally old horror b-movies) through my laptop, which is always hooked up to my moderately sized television.

I go to the cinema 12 to 18 times a year and I also collect vhs, dvd, and blu-ray. I enjoy the acting, cinematography, and editing.

I ceased going to public theaters a couple years ago.
Audience talking to themselves, worse when any two guys opt to sit a seat apart (don't wanna be perceived as homos) raising their voices to maintain their running commentary and critical analysis.
Cellphones became an added joy.
Then texting! A sea of lights twinkling on and off in the darkness, reminding me I was not alone in the cosmos.
As for the increasingly limited screened offerings in my hamlet - well, suffice to declare I am not deaf yet.
Reassuring to know, however, that when I am deaf there awaits a glorious sweep of superhero epics cranked to 11.
I could mention food. People eating with their mouths open. Bits and chunks spitting out whenever something funny or unexpected occurred.
But if I mentioned sorry dining habits, that might make you, esteemed reader, as disgusted as I.
And that would be inconsiderate of me.

I don't go to the theaters very often, unless its a movie that I really want to see... or sometimes my brothers will go (say, to see a new Star wars or Batman film) in which case I'll usually go with them as well. The main reason I don't go to the theaters very often is because I usually get a headache afterwards. On the rare occasions I do go (alone), I'll usually go in the early afternoon on a weekday: the theaters where I live are all but deserted at that time of the day so it literally feels as if I have this giant movie viewing room to myself. Having said that, I did go to two of the midnight releases for the 2nd and 3rd Nolan Batman films and the crowd was pretty great for that.

I usually go to the theater once or twice a year with my friends. They like to pick a popular movie with "favorable reviews" but it is often boring or bad. Last year we saw "mother!" and "The Shape of Water". I can count the latter as the only good film I have watched in theater.

Speaking of theater food, I notice Cinemark offers beer and wine to drink while watching movie. After the munch and cruncher, movie goers now have the slurred drunkard to look forward to.

For recommendation, I use TLO and letterboxd. I follow the tumblr Spiraphobia and they have a top 175 Asian horror/thriller list I sometimes check. There are other great lists as well.

I also subscribe to MUBI, but I know it's not for everyone.

A lot of my favourite horror comes from classic British television. I go to the cinema a couple of time a month at most, as most films these days are dreadful and the general theatre patrons are quite obnoxious. My wife and I tend to check out the Marvel films, but our cinema has a Cinematheque which shows a lot of excellent films, they’re showing Profondo Rosso and several Bergman titles later this year, and I can go at noon, so almost no people at these screenings. As I have been collecting films for many years, I have region-free Blu-ray and DVD players at home, so I can watch old exploitation and horror films in peace and quiet.

Movie theater maybe three times a year. But I don't feel that most movies are made for people like me.

Plenty of good movies are made each year. I would just rather watch them all at home at my own pace.

I would make the effort to go see Profondo Rosso on the big screen. Tenebrae, Opera and Suspiria, too.
