Re: Walter de la Mare Strangers and Pilgrims

Did you ever finish it?

I stumbled on this on Amazon:

Finally a paperback I can easily point people toward. I'm looking for a full table of contents, but from the descriptions of selected stories I can glean that it contains at least Winter, Seaton's Aunt, A:B:O and Out of the Deep.

Yes, I did. Early on there was a sentence that struck me as typical of De la Mare's language, and extremely atypical on the unlayered prose fashionable today, and I meant to make a note of it, but didn't in the end. Anyway, suffice it to say, he very much writes in a style that demands you slow down to its pace. I appreciate this as much as the imagery and atmosphere.

Absolutely candid, carefree, but straightforward speech becomes possible for the first time when one speaks of the highest." - Friedrich Schlegel

Re: Walter de la Mare Strangers and Pilgrims

I should be getting a few books by both Aickman and de la Mare for my birthday.

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."

How much of de la Mare's writing have you read so far? Be prepared that relatively few of his stories fit into the outright horror category, although of these such stories as Seaton's Aunt, All Hallows, Crewe, A Recluse, A:B:O and Mr. Kempe and The Tree are masterful works of terror.

Many of his ghostly stories instead go for a sense of strange melancholy, see: Winter, Strangers & Pilgrims, The Riddle, The Creatures (has anybody mentiond that one yet?), Alice's Godmother (found in the collection of children's stories, but I thought it was mature as his other fiction), The Vats, An Anniversary, The House, The Green Room and Missing.

Re: Walter de la Mare Strangers and Pilgrims

@ James

I've read nothing by Walter de la Mare. Everything I know about him is through the members here.

I should probably read at least two or three stories via Gutenberg first. As for Aickman, I've read seven of his stories - enough to convince me that I'll devour whatever he's written.

In issue No. 6 of Joshi's Spectral Realms, is a fine long essay by Leigh Blackmore , "In Pursuit of the Transcendent: the Weird Verse of Walter de la Mare."

A reminder to people that Out of the Deep and Other Supernatural Tales is now available. It's fantastic to finally have a cheap Amazon paperback of Walter's supernatural fiction to point to people.

It isn't comprehensive, but it'll do for now and has most of his major hitters of the horror/ghostly genre – Seaton's Aunt, All Hallows, Crewe, Out of the Deep, A: B: O and A Recluse. The Game at Cards seems an obscure choice compared to the omitted Mr. Kempe, but I enjoy it. I'm glad they included Winter and the underread gem The Green Room.

Re: Walter de la Mare Strangers and Pilgrims

Having never read any of Walter De La Mare's work before, I was thinking of picking up a second hand copy of his 'Behold, This Dreamer'.

Has anyone read it, and if so can it be recommended?

See James' post above. Out of the Deep is the book you want.

Thank you both. What is included in 'Behold: This Dreamer' then?, aside from the horror stories.
