I genuinely cringed at the knowledge that I posted in this thread 7 years ago. 7 years ago. Anyway, I still contend that there is nothing more important than the imagination. It's my refuge, my source of creation and my mediator between the confusion of the world and what could actually be possible within it. I admit that sometimes everyday life draws me away from creative thought and into utilitarian modes of boring, banal being, but I always come back to the imaginative creativity of my mind, and the ties that bond it all back to the cryptic deciphering of my present state of mind and what I consider reality. My imagination is the only thing that has kept me alive for 34 years and Ligotti, among many others, contributes to my ongoing existence that I ultimately consider pointless, but paradoxically meaningful. Maybe i'll off myself tomorrow. I'm cool with whatever, as long as I can dream and imagine.

Maybe you need some better friends? Perhaps your reading indicates that you've grown beyond your old gang and need to find some folks who are into reading to more accurately reflect your present state of being.

@Robert Adam Gilmour: I don't know any intellectual clown except Zizek, and he's a rare case. I think you're referring to the witty intellectual. A clown degrades himself, blurts out crass jokes, acts ridiculous...things which no intellectual would do.

I can sympathize. I usually don't discuss the futility of all things with most of my acquaintances. It's quite rude to do so under most circumstances. We all have to hide ourselves from time to time. I can't explain to my colleagues that procreation is morally wrong, even though I went into the teaching profession.

I certainly would never recommend my favorite books to them. If someone is an "intellectual," it's a sign that something went "wrong." Sex and potato chips are the norm.

@Robert Adam Gilmour: I understand your point, but I'm not sure anyone would call the Marx Brothers clowns. Absurdist and surrealist act silly in order to question reality. A clown acts silly for the sake of being funny.
