"Nothing lasts! The faun sleeps, / Smiling, mute, remorseless." — Ludmilla Jevsejeva, Autuna Melodio

In St. Petersburg, amidst an uneasy truce with the revolution, there exists a secret trade in looted ikons. But who are the dark strangers seeking for the Gate of the Archangel? In the small town of Tzern, news arrives of the death of the Emperor; meanwhile a postmaster, a priest, a prophet and a war-wearied soldier watch the dawn for signs of the future. Constantinople: A quest for the lost faiths of the former Ottoman Empire leads a French scholar to believe that the strangest may also be the truest. On the edges of Europe, exiles and idealists meet in a café to talk of their hopes—while sinister forces begin to march. These stories, exquisitely told by Mark Valentine, are about individuals caught up in the endings of old empires—and of what comes next.

Contents
A Certain Power
The Dawn at Tzern
A Walled Garden on the Bosphoros
Carden in Capaea
The Bookshop in Novy Svet
The Autumn Keeper
The Amber Cigarette
The Ka of Astarakahn
The Original Light
The Unrest at Aachen

Re: The Swan River Press

That's great news, Brian. Good to see these stories reprinted in a more accessible form.

If anyone wants even more MV stories, I hope nobody minds me mentioning that there are those I have been proud to publish, viz:

Undergrowth - Zencore (2007)
The Man Who Made The Yellow God - Null Immortalis (2010)
You Walk The Pages - The Horror Anthology of Horror Anthologies (2011)
Without Instruments - The First Book of Classical Horror Stories (2012)

Re: The Swan River Press

The Man Who Made The Yellow God - Null Immortalis (2010) - that's a great title. I'd love to read the story, is it still available, Des?
I have read all of the stories collected in the Swan River Press book, and you are in for a treat if you haven't.

Re: The Swan River Press

ATTENTION ARTISTS!

We need cover art for the forthcoming Swan River Press Sampler ebook anthology! And so we've decided to hold a competition:

The winner's artwork will adorn the cover of the Sampler for first half of 2013. Artwork dimensions should be 198 mm x 129 mm (oriented portrait, as opposed to landscape), and in keeping with the Swan River Press aesthetic (we're really not into scarecrows with demonic skeleton heads and the like, sorry). You can have at past book Swan River Press book covers as your guide, but otherwise be creative.

The deadline is 10 November 2012. Up to three submissions of original artwork per person, please email Brian J. Showers, or send files in a private message through the Swan River Press Facebook page. Looking forward to seeing all the wonderful pieces! Good luck!
