I was very impressed by Andreyev's short stories. At best he manages to capture a very concentrated feeling of existential panic a la Dostoevsky - I was gratified to find that in an Amazon review someone had chanced on the same comparison that came to my mind: a cross between Dostoevsky and Poe. He - Andreyev - gives a unique mix between the conte cruel/proto-weird story formula and the thematic preoccupations of the great Russian writers (alienation, desperation, will to meaning, vanity of worldly aspirations in the face of death et cetera et cetera).

Has anyone here read his unfinished novel fragment The Diary of Satan?

I first read Andreyev's The Seven Who Were Hanged on a bench in the park, and was visibly moved to tears. Some blokes walked past and started calling me Forrest Gump. I still do not understand the reference.

I've never written a story for a tribute anthology. I assume one must capture the aesthetic mood or themes explored by the original author. So, what is the "essence" of Andreyev's work?
