Re: Movie Recommendations

Got to second Ligeia's recommendation of "The Eye".

Clever, moving and chilling. I actually screamed twice when I saw it, and I very rarely scream at movies.

Danny Boyle 'Sunshine'

i'm a fan of Danny Boyle since 'Shallow Grave'...

(Dictated while taking a stroll) I have come to realizewhat a superbly contrived marionette man is. Though without strings attached, one can strut, jump, hop and, moreover, utter words, an elaborately made puppet! Who knows? At the Bon season next year, I may be a new dead invited to the Bon festival. What an evanescent world! This truth keeps slipping off our minds.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I've seen two movies recently that have just blown me away. The first is called "We Are the Strange". I know there are lots of stop-animation fans here, and you have to see this film. It mixes 8 bit, anime, traditional animation and stop-animation. Suffice to say, it is one of the most ####ed up and bizarre films I've ever seen, and it absolutely blew me away. It's like playing a video game. The director, M dot Strange, is nothing short of visionary. Do not take drugs while watching this film.

The other is "Synecdoche, New York". This is Charlie Kaufman's first directorial debut after writing screenplays for classics like "Being John Malkovich", "Adaptation", "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind". I don't use the term "profound" to describe many films, but it fits this one perfectly. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays an aging play director who takes on one of the biggest challenges ever in theater history. Along with this, Seymour is aging and becomes increasingly aware that he is dying. The last fifteen minutes of the film are some of the most poignant I've ever seen. After having watched the film, I was just speechless for thirty minutes. It's extremely existential, not exactly motivating, and absolutely breathtaking

there is no stronger drug than reality

Re: Movie Recommendations

Was very impressed by the Finnish film SAUNA at the Dead By Dawn horror movie festival recently, and I think it may appeal to many here. Set in the middle ages, in the aftermath of war, where a boundary commission marking out the new border comes across a remote village where something is very wrong. It's slow, bleak, and hints at all kinds of spiritual and philosophical horrors. It's also difficult and ambiguous in a way that seriously divided the audience. But it's haunted me ever since, and I'll definitely be needing to see it again.

Here's the IMDB link: Sauna (2008)

Re: Movie Recommendations

If you're not a fan of the Saw series, you may have missed this one. I'm not a fan of the Saw series, but I was lucky enough to catch this one. I think no Ligottian should go without seeing it.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I would recommend "The Hole" - released in the US as "After the Hole". A study of human evil. Quite chilling in fact.
