Re: Del Toro and Cameron join forces for "At The Mountains of Madness"

If I'd know the project would die like this, I would have gladly reversed my feelings on Cruise being linked to it.

Truly, a sad day for us all. I mourn for what could have been.

Re: Del Toro and Cameron join forces for "At The Mountains of Madness"

I wasn’t all that excited by this film to start. Interested, yes. Could have been a great piece of art, could have been a so-so popcorn movie . . . Let someone spend 150 million on 3 Kiernan films, or a Barron and a KIY. You do that, I’m excited. This is dead in the water today . . . Next week things could be very different.

Re: Del Toro and Cameron join forces for "At The Mountains of Madness"

There are at least two anthologies being edited, that I know of, related to the production of the film. Perhaps that is the good thing that will come from this. I feel dashed upon ye rocks.

"We work in the dark -- we do what we can -- we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art."

Re: Del Toro and Cameron join forces for "At The Mountains of Madness"

I can understand the hesitation of the producers investing that much money into an "R" rated film given the likely demographic of the core audience. It has been quite a while since I read the novel, but I can't recall anything that would push it into the "R" rating category. Del Toro clearly understands Lovecraft and his work (evidenced by his interview in the HPL documentary) but I am curious as to his firm stance about the rating. As far as Cruise goes, he can be a fine actor, but I can do without him.

R ratings can be for profanity (4+ instances of "####" or similar), graphic/explicit sex, graphic/explicit drug use (particularly with harder drugs), or graphic violence with lots of blood and no educational/historical value.

Lovecraft's stories weren't too intensive on the violence or the sex, but implied much (sex with Yog Sothoth in "The Dunwich Horror," gruesome rituals in "the horror at red hook," etc). I suspect the R rating would be the result of Del Toro displaying the things Lovecraft merely implies.

either that or it went the route of other Lovecraftian films and had a tentacle-sex scene in the script.

It's a terrible shame this project fell through.
