I have to agree. The first time I finished reading it I felt like I was coming off a drug.

Re: The William Hope Hodgson thread

I've read a good bit more of Wright's blog and found nothing objectionable in it. I'm hoping he may have written more on Hodgson. I like the guy.

Re: The William Hope Hodgson thread

Druidic- I'm not sure how his ideas I quoted about how women ought to be don't bother you. Did you see his recent blog that accuses anti-Trump protesters of doing witchcraft? Or his defences of Milo Y?

Here's a Wright interview on Hodgson from the excellent blog Grey Dog Tales. He sounds perfectly sane here as far as I recall.
The Inheritors 3: John C Wright - greydogtales

But here is a few examples of him looking less good.

An account from fantasy author Scott Lynch

Raphael Ordonez is a fantasy author and painter who has an insightful blog. I think he's a Hodgson fan too. He's also a fan of John C Wright. But here they debate art and Wright is very rude and argues poorly.
Cosmic Antipodes: Arts of the Beautiful: Part I

George RR Martin argues back entertainingly. Check out second comment, there is Solarbird with a link.

There should be a Best Of collection called Dope Hodgson.

Re: The William Hope Hodgson thread

Robert, thanks for the Hodgson related stuff. I'll check it all out.

Not wanting to start a serious debate on Trump, I can't help point out that some anti-Trumpsters do what Wright accuses them of, witchcraft LOL. I can't take any of the zany stuff too seriously; everyone has the right to regard Trump as a Devil, a Messiah or a Mediocrity. Just let's say we live in interesting times.

Witches around the world plot mass spell against Trump | New York Post

I didn't find his remarks on women to be shocking but they probably belong to another century. There's a difference between misogyny and romanticising women. (The remark about the sense of "sanctity" that women inspire in men, the belief that women are more delicate and noble than men is just old fashioned romantic hogwash. But many male artists--and probably female ones as well--bought into that until around the second half of the 20th Century. It isn't hateful, just mythology.

But thanks again for the links. I'll put 'em to good use.

Just checked and Raphael Ordonez said he's written a couple of Night Land tales.

Re: The William Hope Hodgson thread

One interesting thing about The Night Land that few mention is it seems to, very deliberately, mine a vein of 'genuine' esoteric knowledge. The symbolism is throughout the entire novel. After reading Gurdjieff's Beelzebub's Tales it's pretty apparent that Hodgson, in his travels, came across some very interesting ideas. If I ever have the ambition, God help me, I might well try to tackle it; but we're talking about a serious in-depth look at the manipulation of symbols that point to (or stand for) 'Work Ideas' like "self-remembering," "self-observation," the Law of Seven, the Law of Three, the Octave, the Sun Absolute and a lot more.

Lets Jump Back to Something Else Altogether:
Writing about "Idealized Romantic mythology," I wanted to point out Leonard Cohen, a brilliant and seriously gifted poet, used, quite cunningly, a far more clever, more mature Romantic Love/Sex mythology to 'soften' his dark vision and make his most 'depressing' songs pleasing to many who would have otherwise found them unbearable. That's Art in a nutshell.

I'm afraid that bolded parts reveal a lot about you, none of it good.

On topic: how are John B. Ford's pastiches of Hodgson's nautical horror? Some of them are available online, looks like he is relatively open for having his fiction featured on blogs and podcasts (kind of surprising, given that he has no online presence nor any interest in reprinting his collections, by the looks of it).

Seems like another angry internet person moaning about how everything in the modern world is now viewed through the prism of political factionalism, whilst then himself viewing absolutely everything through the prism of political factionalism.

Re: The William Hope Hodgson thread

In addition to that he's lended his prestige to a movement that uses gamergate style tactics on people and allied with a far right extremist. He's still got some books coming out from Tor (the biggest fantasy publisher) but there's no doubt his career will suffer for his choices. I think he said he's having trouble buying groceries now.
