The book is out, heavily expanded from the original Kickstarter edition.

Re: H.P. Lovecraft and the Alt.Right

The origin of the alt-right is in political illiteracy and gullibility to antisemitic conspiracy theories about 'cultural Marxism'. Whatever initial 'edginess' there was in supporting Trump or white nationalism is slowly being replaced with a deep and well earned shame. I already see so many centrists who spread alt-right conspiracy theories starting to distance themselves from them.

Didn't realise that was happening. I think if they were indulging in that behaviour they're probably just right wing but unwilling to call themselves that.

Precisely. The Dave Rubins and Sargons of the world have a lot to answer for.

Re: H.P. Lovecraft and the Alt.Right

I don't quite know what to make of Rubin, he seems incredibly naive about what he's doing sometimes. He seemed to be making an honest attempt to cool things down but he kept having too many ridiculous right wing guests. He said he tried in vain to get more left wing guests and maybe the audience he built scared them away (it does seem quite possible that some of them would be inundated with trolls if they appeared on his show).

Re: H.P. Lovecraft and the Alt.Right

His audience's whole idea of reasoned discourse is for him to nod in awe while far right lunatics monologue unchallenged. Such is the life of a classical liberal free thinker in the great sceptic marketplace of ideas.

ContraPoints and hbomberguy are political YouTubers well worth following. Otherwise I just use the site for music and Troma movies. After I first joined here my recommendations were ruined for ages due to so many suggestions for worthless 'Feminist REKT by logic' or 'Socialist DESTROYED by classical liberal' type videos. Despite our ideological differences I respect my (generally) well behaved British Christian conservative friends, but the online sphere for the populist right grows more coarsely idiotic by the day, and YouTube is one of the worst culprits for this shrill material.

Re: H.P. Lovecraft and the Alt.Right

I knew ContraPoints but not hbomberguy. I like some of it but I wish they didn't try to be funny so often, I guess it's something people gravitate towards when a camera is on them. Some of it is funny though.

Part of the reason I think Rubin seems naive is that he often seems oblivious to the nasty online shenanigans his buddies get up to. It can't be easy knowing what all these people get up to, and I really don't expect much but he should probably know a bit more.

I don't envy these youtubers and debaters having to watch and listen to hours of garbage podcasts and videos to know what each other have been saying. Even if the content was good, the sheer amount of it would get depressing.

Re: H.P. Lovecraft and the Alt.Right

I don't think Rubin is naive. He's an opportunist. He cribs all his talking points from Milo, Molyneux and the gang, says he's not on their side in order to distinguish himself and just rakes in the Patreon money. It's not even his own opportunist strategy as Sargon was already doing the same thing. He recently got caught citing white nationalist conspiracy theories about Heather Hayes' death.

Re: H.P. Lovecraft and the Alt.Right

There's really an entire genre of faux intellectuals who parrot "milder" alt-right memes, and consciously try to attract far right audience while claiming that they are not far right themselves. People like Jordan Peterson made a huge business out of that.

Jordan Peterson vomits up endless streams of disgusting inanity. It is fascinating to watch, but it ultimately makes one nauseated.
