I still have yet to read the last 4 of the Covenant books, sadly (have only read the first two trilogies so far). Hope to get to that maybe next year.


They are quite an investment in time, attention and emotional resources, but I found it worth all that and more. Many plot surprises in store for the dedicated fans of Thomas Covenant, and a satisfying conclusion to an epic covering more than ten thousand years of time in the Land.

I would highly recommend the Flat Earth series by Tanith Lee. These books are decadent and lush, like a modern version of Arabian Nights.

For an interesting take on sword and sorcery, I would also recommend her Birthgrave trilogy. I am delighted that these books have been reissued recently by Daw. Hopefully a new generation of readers will discover and grow to adore her wonderful style as much as I do!

The Sandman by Neil Gaiman and Lucifer by Mike Carey.

Lucifer is a little bit better, in my view.

I know that Shea is relatively well known around here, but his rarely read novel "In Yana" must be mentioned as the single most Vancian novel not written by Vance himself. Well worth reading, and it comes with a fair share of Shea's own twisted imagery.

As for the recent stuff, I guess that Scott Bakker might be relevant to this community's interests. I can't say that I've enjoyed it myself, but his fantasy series is dark fantasy/fantasy horror with accent placed on "dark" and "horror", and its underlying philosophy is nothing if not Ligottian.

I concur with the Mervyn Peake reference. The Gormenghast Trilogy is mind-blowing, and is filled with so much dense, finely- crafted prose that it isn't even funny. It is a massive endeavor to read, but well worth it in my opinion.

Great recommendations on this thread, and a couple mentioned that I'll need to check out. From the authors listed that I have read, Stephen R. Donaldson and Mervyn Peake are the two that stand out for me. It's nice to see Tanith Lee's [I]Birthgrave Trilogy[I] mentioned as well.

For something a bit less demanding than the above, I found David Eddings a fun read, most notably his Belgariad and Malloreon series. The Elenium and Tamuli trilogies are also worthwhile.

I can also recommend Niel Hancock's books set in Atlanton Earth which cover twelve books over three series (The Wilderness of Four / The Circle of Light / The Windameir Circle), and an additional standalone novel [I]Dragon Winter[I].

My local library was selling off a complete set of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. I was in two minds as whether to buy it as it's very long; both in the number of volumes and in the size of each volume. Plus, I'd heard wildly differing opinions on his work; some people think he's the bee's knees while others think he's absolutely awful. But I already knew that the library only had a few of the WoT books available for loan and the complete set cost less than £5 so I took a chance.
