Absences and Inhumanity: Six Works of Abstract Horror

Here's 6 works of 'abstract horror' recommended by Gary J. Shipley:

Absences and Inhumanity: 6 Works of Abstract Horror | Literary Hub

Happy Halloween, all. Probably going to read some Teatro Grottesco to celebrate ('Purity,' and a few others from that volume, are the only Ligotti stories I haven't read yet, I believe.)

This is great. Thank you.

Re: Absences and Inhumanity: Six Works of Abstract Horror

LitHub editors have decided to remove Land from that list, decision that I think is only fair.
Here's hoping that this won't damage relations between Shipley and LitHub. As some commenter on his article have mentioned, he should've, at the very least, mentioned Nick Land's political affiliations before recommending his books, so that people can be aware what sort of person it is that their money will be going to if they decide to purchase any of them.

Why should one author's political affiliations be mentioned when the other five are not? It wasn't an article about politics--it was an article about abstract horror.

Considering that Land's book contains a "manifesto" on abstract horror, the list arguably loses coherence if you remove it. That is, if someone is actually interested in learning more about abstract horror, they are now potentially unaware of a valuable resource.

Land's politics may be odious, or at least odious people seem to have embraced his recent ramblings, but that's no excuse for altering Shipley's intentions in putting his list together.

Political intolerance ruins everything.

If the current contretemps is any indication, taking a leave of absence from this site was most certainly the correct idea.

Re: Absences and Inhumanity: Six Works of Abstract Horror

While Land's philosophies are utterly abhorrent, I am firmly opposed to any kind of censorship when it comes to fiction. As much as I might dislike the man's ideas, I can't help but feel that censoring fiction based on the political background of the writer is a little too close to a Dystopian ideal for my liking.

Re: Absences and Inhumanity: Six Works of Abstract Horror

Notice what I actually wrote in my post. People at least had right to know who Land is and what sort of stuff he's involved into before deciding to financially support him by purchasing his fiction. We aren't talking about regular joe who happens to hold some private views, we are talking about prominent far right ideologue who dedicated his time to actively popularizing those views.
This is who we are talking about:

Also, some works on that list predate his manifesto by quite a bit. He and his manifesto are not at all important for the sort of fiction discussed, not to mention that I doubt that some of the authors mentioned would feel right with being lumped into "genre" defined by someone like him.
