MLB: What’s on the horizon for Thomas Ligotti?

LIGOTTI: The same thing that's on the horizon for everyone--pain and death.

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

"While a worldwide suicide pact is highly appealing, what romantic fabrications would cause one to take part in it, just to conserve this planet? The earth is not our home. We came from nothing, and to that condition our nostalgia should turn. Why should anyone care about this dim bulb in the blackness of space? The earth produced us, or at least subsidized our evolution. Is it really entitled to receive a pardon, never mind the sacrifice of human lives, for this original sin--a capital crime in reverse (just as reproduction makes one an accessory before the fact to an individual's death)? Someone once said that nature abhors a vacuum. This is precisely why nature should be abhorred."

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

Dreams and Responsibility
by Mark Twain

Strange, indeed, that you should not have suspected that your universe and its contents were only dreams, visions, fiction! Strange, because they are so frankly and hysterically insane - like all dreams. A God who could make good children as easily as bad, yet preferred to make bad ones; who could easily have made every one of them happy, yet never made a single happy one; who made them prize their bitter life, yet stingily cut it short; who gave his angels painless lives, yet cursed his other children with biting miseries and maladies of mind and body; who mouths justice and invented hell - mouths mercy and invented hell - mouths Golden Rules, and forgiveness multiplied by seventy times seven, and invented hell; who frowns upon crimes, yet commits them all; who created man without invitation, then tries to shuffle the responsibility for man's acts upon man, instead of honorably placing it where it belongs, upon himself; and finally, with altogether divine obtuseness, invites this poor, abused slave to worship him!...
It is true, that which I have revealed to you: there is no God, no universe, no human race, no earthly life, no heaven, no hell. It is all a dream - a grotesque and foolish dream. Nothing exists but you. And you are but a thought - a vagrant thought, a useless thought, a homeless thought, wandering forlorn among empty eternities!

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

The more corrupt an age becomes, the greater is its sense of humour. I am using the word "humour" from want of a better word. Humour is like blue-bottle flies which are born of putrefaction, and feed on corruption.
Yet nevertheless, let us be thankful we have that sense, when the ugly becomes the grotesque, and the atrocious the comic.

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

"It was as if he were detached, a lonely, floating brain that looked out upon a thing it could not understand nor could ever try to understand; as if he might even be afraid of understanding it - a thing of mystery and delight so long as he retained an ignorance of it, but something fearsome and altogether overpowering once the ignorance had gone."
Clifford D. Simak - "All the Traps of Earth"

"What does it mean to be alive except to court disaster and suffering at every moment?"

Tibet: Carnivals?
Ligotti: Ceremonies for initiating children into the cult of the sinister.
Tibet: Gas stations?
Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

"The Theodorus Nitz commercial squeaked, 'In the presence of strangers do you feel you don't quite exist? Do they seem not to notice you, as if you were invisible? On a bus or spaceship do you sometimes look around you and discover that no one, absolutely no one, recognizes you or cares about you and quite possibly may even -'"

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

In a recent magazine article ("The X, Y and Z of Fort" by Jim Steinmeyer, Fortean Times No. 237, May 2008), I came across this choice quotation from a letter by Charles Fort to Theodore Dreiser: "The kindest and best people in the world are pessimists. May the neo-gods preserve us from the smirking fools or rascals that we call optimists."
