Nick Blinko

I ran across his work first on Coil's Unnatural History III album cover and looked him up online. I seem to remember reading that he suffered from schizophrenia and had a habit of burying is art in his backyard so it would grow.

Re: Nick Blinko

A book of writings by Nick Blinko should be coming out on Coptic Cat (www.durtro.com) quite soon.

The latest news regarding the book was issued on the 20th of August 2008:

However this has been in the works since late 2007, when David Tibet posted this:

Durtro are delighted to announce that we will be publishing the new novel by Rudimentary Peni's Nick Blinko. Nick has many admirers for his amazing music, and his beautiful art and writing. We expect publication towards the end of 2007. There will also be a special art edition of the book, which will include, amongst other extras, an original piece of artwork by Nick. For more information on Nick's art, visit his page at the Henry Boxer Gallery at www.outsiderart.co.uk/blinko.htm.
I think it was originally intended for July 2008, but releases by Durtro/Coptic Cat seems to have a disposition for delays.

Re: Nick Blinko

I didn't realize Blinko is the same guy from Rudimentary Peni. Music, strange art, and a book?! What a talented individual!

Schizophrenic or not, this artwork is very appealing to me. I'm also fascinated and distrubed by the notion of burying art in the ground. Talk about art taking on a life of its own outside the head of the creator.

I also came across his art on the "Unnatural history III"-CD. I found some of his pictures so intense that I even used one for my avatar here.

My favourite Blinko image is this Goreyesque album cover:

Incidentally, the music is also very good.

The H.P. Lovecraft based Rudimentary Peni tracks are some of my favorites. Here's a link to a Youtube with a couple of Lovecraft inspired songs:

Re: Nick Blinko

I did not know about "Coptic Cat" and am now forced to seek it out. Oh, my aching wallet...

Nick has an earlier novel, "The Primal Screamer", that was first published in 1995. A while back, I picked up a 2002 reissue from Spare Change Books.

I regret that it is still in my growing To Read pile, but looks quite interesting. The link above leads to scans of the interior artwork, among other things.

Rudimentary Peni are a staggering band. If you can get your hands on their first couple of 12" records, they come housed in fold-out paper sleeves, like other Crass Records releases. When unfolded, you are staring at a large piece of complex, bewildering, and downright creepy art - it must be seen to be appreciated. I liked it enough to buy a second copy of Death Church in my youth so that I could hang the poster up on my wall. This is just the front cover:

Oh yeah, besides the art you get weird, chugging English punk rock of the finest variety. CDs are still pretty easy to get, but don't have the same visual impact...

Re: Nick Blinko

From the latest Durtro update:
Quote
Nick Blinko: ‘The Haunted Head’
I went to lunch last week with Nick and Henry Boxer, our mutual friend and Nick's agent. We have made some final decisions about our publication of Nick's strange and dreamlike novel, and we will be putting this book up on Durtro very soon for advance orders.
However, before we post a definitive statement about the volume, I just wanted to write a brief description of the book. The hard-back edition will be a limited edition, with blocked covers and spine, pictorial end-papers with Nick's work on them, and a book-ribbon. The novel itself is 200 pages long. Each copy will come with a 1-track CD featuring a newly-recorded and previously unreleased Rudimentary Peni song.
Nick wrote out the book twice, in his obsessively beautiful handwriting. One of these copies was written in an A4 pad, and the other version over approximately 350 one-sided white postcards measuring 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" (90 x 147mm). Three random examples are shown. Each copy of the book comes with one of these original postcards with text from the novel. This of course means that the book is limited to the number of manuscript cards. Once the cards are finished, the edition is ended.
At the same time, we will be adding a collection of identically-sized postcards of Nick's artwork onto the Durtro shop, at various prices which will depend on the size and complexity of the image on the postcard.
Nick Blinko's text drawings have been included in several museum shows and touring exhibitions in the UK and France, whilst others are housed in the permanent collections of the following museums: The Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne and the Outsider Collection & Archive, London.
Fuller details very soon.

Re: Nick Blinko

Nick Blinko contributed to some early issues of Aklo magazine, as did I – this led us to be in touch for a while, and I met him at a convention in the mid-80s. A shy, self-effacing man with a quiet sense of humour, he gave little overt sign of the wild imagination that his art revealed. It's good to know that he is still working and creating.

(Note: he is not to be confused with the crime novelist and journalist Nicholas Blincoe, who is not the same person and nothing like him.)

Nick Blinko is represented in The Collection de l'Art Brut, Lausanne and The Outsider Collection and Archive, London.
"In the case of British artist Nick Blinko (b.1961), who has in the past been hospitalised, the need to make pictures is stronger than the desire for the psychic 'stability' brought by therapeutic drugs which adversely affects his ability to work. His images are constructed of microscopically detailed elements, sometimes consisting of literally hundreds of interconnecting figures and faces, which he draws without the aid of magnifying lenses and which contain an iconography that places him in the company of the likes of Bosch, Bruegel and the late Goya. These pictures produced in periods when he was not taking medication bring no respite from the psychic torment and delusions from which he suffers. In order to make art, Blinko risks total psychological exposure." Professor Colin Rhodes, Outsider Art: Spontaneous Alternatives, Thames & Hudson, 2000.
