Please Delete My Account

Hello,

I keep getting email reminders that I haven't been on the site for a while, and there's no way I can make them stop appearing in my in box. It's quite annoying.

As such could you please delete my account (it's the only way I can think of making them stop). As I like to visit at my own discretion rather than having messages I can't control sent to my email inbox.

Thanks!

Paul

This is the reminder email referenced above:

"But the significant thing is not to begin but to continue, not to arrive but to stay."
Thomas Ligotti - "The Career of Nightmares"

Hello, <USERNAME>!
We've noticed that you've not been active on The Nightmare Network for quite some time now, and we miss you! Could we not tempt you back?
If you don't remember your password, you can request it here: THOMAS LIGOTTI ONLINE - Lost Password Recovery Form.

We hope to see you soon. Please accept my sincere apologies if I have disturbed your inbox.

Kindest Regards,
Dr. Bantham

As I recall, this is the second time I have had an irate response to an Inactive User Reminder Email. I have actually had a greater number of members thank me for the reminder, which is sent out by the server based on days of inactivity. For anyone who does not wish to receive such reminders or any other email contact from TLO, you may deactivate automated and administrator email here:
TLO UserCP - Edit Options

Here is the appropriate section:
Receive Email
From time to time, the administrators may want to send you email notices.
If you do not want to receive these notices, disable this option.
  • Receive Email from Administrators

This is clearly an option when you register at TLO. I too have a great distaste for spam. To make the reminder less nagging, I have set the inactivity duration to 365 days and turned off subsequent reminders thereafter. The notice itself has been revised as follows:
Quote
"But the significant thing is not to begin but to continue, not to arrive but to stay."
Thomas Ligotti - "The Career of Nightmares"

<USERNAME>,

This is an automated email generated by the TLO server based upon your inactivity period of one year. If you cannot remember your password, you can request it here: THOMAS LIGOTTI ONLINE - Lost Password Recovery Form.

Please accept my sincere apologies if I have disturbed your inbox. This will be your only reminder email. You are receiving this reminder as you elected to receive email from TLO administrators when you registered. If you wish to have this setting changed, simply reply to this email with a request and your account will be modified accordingly.

Kindest Regards,
Dr. Bantham

Re: Please Delete My Account

I don't seem ever to have been inactive enough to trigger the reminder email, but I'm interested to read it. I must say, Dr B, that it's the nicest email I've ever seen that might be interpreted as spam. I think a person would have to be a right old testy bugger (saving the pardon of PaulofCthulhu) to object to it. I wonder how this person reacts if and when receiving penis enlargement emails, or ones from Nigerians offering a chance for loads of easy money.

To be clear, I have corresponded with Paul periodically over the past few years and know him to be quite a gentleman. He is the administrator for Yog-Sothoth.com, which is massive resource of correlated contents for fans of H. P. Lovecraft and the Call of Cthulhu RPG. I daresay that Paul is perhaps more sensitive to spam and likely practices greater care with his site members. He did cause me to pause and reconsider the terms and phrasing of the reminder, both of which I believe I have improved for the better.

As an aside, though I am comforted by the fact that I am not the only member receiving emails regarding member enlargement, I am greatly concerned that my Nigerian friend has offered you the opportunity to share in our wealth. My return will no doubt be diminished if you enact upon his requests. Have mercy!

Have you noticed that viagra is a common theme for spam, as well as penis enlargement? I used to receive both forms of spam at work -- and the message seemed to be "you're impotent, and your member is laughably small". Personally, I think that viagra is an abomination, allowing dirty old men to do things which providence has mercifully placed beyond their natural ability.

As to our Nigerian benefactor, be reasonable! My needs are modest, and I'm sure that he has the wherewithal to provide for us both.

In the early 90s, I used to work in a credit card office. There was a list on the wall of countries to which credit cards were not, under any circumstances, to be sent. The country on the top of the list was Nigeria. I'll bet the list is a lot longer now.

Aha, Dr. Bantham! This is the quotation I now remember suggesting as a recruitment thingie. You were right and I was wrong about "The Nightmare Network" excerpt. Crow tastes just like chicken.

"What does it mean to be alive except to court disaster and suffering at every moment?"

Tibet: Carnivals?
Ligotti: Ceremonies for initiating children into the cult of the sinister.
Tibet: Gas stations?
Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

Therefore I have not yet lost my mind? Eternal bliss has been denied? Alas, as I was hoping that I had finally shaken off reality for the comforting coat of madness. Is it just me, or is it hot in here?
