I am disapointed by the lack of Horlicks magazine...

Re: Arthur Machen

This thread seems to be in a strange place, so I'm not sure this is the most appropriate place for it, but here's a link to a 2013 article by John Gray, about Machen:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22648328

"This problem of reconstructing a society that includes as its members the great thinkers of the past inevitably brings to mind Machiavelli's famous letter in which he describes to his friend Francesco Vettori the course of his days in lowly occupations in the dubious rural society of San Casciano, then how, when evening comes, he dons festival garb, goes to his study, and joins the company of the ancients for urbane intercourse and conversation." - Autobiographical Reflections, Eric Voegelin

Re: Arthur Machen

I have read and seen numerous biographies and overviews of Machen; yet this one now remains my absolute favourite. Very concise, erudite, and elegant.

I have started preternaturalising 'The Three Impostors' here in preparation for the Sarob Press book with three new novellas inspired by this Machen work.

A very good tribute in verse to The White People:

Currently (slowly) reading A Fragment of Life.

I am in awe.

I know Machen gets a lot of crap for his weaker pieces but when the man was on, he was freakin on. I really enjoy Fragment too.

Re: Arthur Machen

I've not read much Machen - "The Great God Pan" and "The White People" didn't make an impression on - with the exception of the sinners and saint prologue to the former, which I found absolutely brilliant. I do, however, have the Tartarus edition of "House of Souls", which I'll read through in the future, including his two most famous stories. Machen might be an author I need to read multiple times to appreciate....
