Re: Arthur Machen

This thread seems to be in a strange place, so I'm not sure this is the most appropriate place for it, but here's a link to a 2013 article by John Gray, about Machen:

Re: Arthur Machen

I have read and seen numerous biographies and overviews of Machen; yet this one now remains my absolute favourite. Very concise, erudite, and elegant.

I have started preternaturalising 'The Three Impostors' here in preparation for the Sarob Press book with three new novellas inspired by this Machen work.

A very good tribute in verse to The White People:

Currently (slowly) reading A Fragment of Life.

I am in awe.

I know Machen gets a lot of crap for his weaker pieces but when the man was on, he was freakin on. I really enjoy Fragment too.

Re: Arthur Machen

Machen is a writer I rate very highly, despite only revisiting a comparatively small portion of his work. The Hill of Dreams and The White People alone had sufficient impact on me to rate him as a master. His style and worldview collided in a startling, unique manner when he was on form. As I feel with Robert W. Chambers, I just wish he'd written more in the grand weird style he had inadvertently created with those works and The Novel of the Black Seal or The Great God Pan.

I don't really have much interest in his writings outside of the folk horror sphere.
