Re: What are your favorite horror video games?

I'm glad I'm not the only person here who likes System Shock 2.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is a very good game, though I've never finished it.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is an underrated gem.

I do have a soft spot for the first games in the Doom and Quake series (in the case of Quake, because of the Trent Reznor soundtrack in particular).

Amnesia was a very scary game, though I haven't played the sequel yet. The only game I ever had to stop playing because I found it too scary/intense was SCP: Containment Breach.

Re: What are your favorite horror video games?

Even though I loved Quake 2, I was very disappointed that it didn't have anything to do with the first Quake storyline.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Yeah; the part where the demon crushed your face (it was a video you got if the demon catched you near the end of the game) was and still is absolutely terrifying and disgusting. Phantasmagoria 2 sucked, though.

Re: What are your favorite horror video games?

The first two Silent Hill games for sure. I think they offer really incredible experiences you can't get much anywhere else.

I'm very fond of the style of the early Resident Evil games on PlayStation 1 and GameCube, aside from the weak drama. I still think the remake of the first game was the peak.
The first Onimusha had some great stuff in it too.

I love things like the 2D Castlevania, Splatterhouse and Ghosts N Goblins/Ghouls series'.

Re: What are your favorite horror video games?

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is brilliant. I've played some of the sequel, and it's pretty cool so far but overall it seems the first garnered better reviews.

The company also has the Penumbra trilogy, precursors to Amnesia, and not as refined but worth checking out (I have all three but have only played some of the first). The company's (Frictional Games) next game is SOMA and it looks very promising. What sets these games apart from "traditional" survival horror games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill is that there are no weapons. The player has to hide and use stealth to stay alive, and it makes the player feel much more vulnerable. Sure Doom 3 has some jump scares, but when you can turn and blast the culprit with a shotgun the scares don't hit nearly as hard as they do in Amnesia, when you are running through darkened halls, searching for a hiding space.
If you enjoy these games you can check out Outlast, which involves breaking into an asylum with your videocamera to find proof of wrongdoing and experimentation of a malicious nature. There is also a lack of weaponry and lots of hiding/stealth, and some running/parkour to escape some enemies. Jump scares for days and a creepy atmosphere.

Darkwood is a cool game, and for a top down, 2d perspective is really atmospheric and creepy. It's still in development but available via Steam Early Access and is totally worth checking out.

For fans of low/retro graphics another worthy one to check out is Lone Survivor by developer Jasper Byrne. Very creepy and atmospheric.

The Bioshock games have an element of horror, especially the first, although Infinite is the overall best of the series. This series is the spiritual successor to System Shock and is quite fun.

I think Capcom's Clock Tower series did this. Also some of the Siren series (sometimes titled Forbidden Siren and Blood Siren). There was a few bits like that in Resident Evil as well.

There was an old arcade game that two teenagers died of heart attack playing. Can't remember the name.

Re: What are your favorite horror video games?

Robert I think the arcade game was Berzerk. An 18 year old made the high score list twice in fifteen minutes and then died of a heart attack, making it the first video game to be involved in a player's death. At least according to Wikipedia.

Re: What are your favorite horror video games?

Wow, most of the good ones have been covered (even Friday the 13th from back in the day, here I thought no one else would know that one)

I guess I'll add Dark Souls (you're dead, that counts, right?), the Left 4 Dead series, State of Decay, Betrayer, and the TellTale Games Walking Dead stuff.

This is the scene of Phantasmagoria I was talking about:

It is still disgusting after all this years.
