Just watched this film and thought I could pop in to tell everyone how much impressed I am.
Since I'm not good at reviewing films let me quote someone else's response (from IMDb):

Spanish director Nacho Cerda's THE ABANDONED is like the beautiful, unholy marriage of Lucio Fulci (circa THE BEYOND) and Russian art-house master Andrei Tarkovsky -- if that sounds like some high-falutin' pretentious art/horror movie, think again: this film is so downright terrifying I spent half the movie with my hands over my eyes, and my brother confirmed it's one of the scariest flicks he's ever seen. Cerda conjures up a classic Haunted House from Hell (or in this case, the Russian countryside) scenario, and then wrings about as many shocks and spinetingling moments out of it as (in)humanly possible. Some amazing, ear-shredding sound design also adds to the scare factor. Mucho credit goes to main screenwriter Karim Hussain for creating a storyline that is at once enigmatic in an unfolding, puzzle-box kind of way and also emotionally resonant and intense. Again, if you long for the days of classic Fulci shockers with a strong dose of PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK/THE LAST WAVE dreamlike vibe thrown in -- check this one out. A winner all the way.




That's exactly what I could say about the film. I immediately saw the connection with Tarkovsky and Fulci. Well, the film has some minor flaws but is worth checking out. I'm sure some Ligottians will like it.


Perhaps, I should also add that some compare Abandoned to Session 9! Oh, I think I know why!

It´s indeed a very good film.It´s similar in vibe to another Spanish movie where there are family issues to be solved (unfortunately I can´t remember its name).The gore is well placed, the scares are very good (watching this with headphones is a great experience)and the end is bleak and totally hopeless (is this the connection you saw between this one and Session 9?).That villain has never mistaken me!
I second the recommendation!

Glad you liked it, Severini. I haven't noticed anybody replied to that recommendation until now.
There was a discussion at shocklines some time ago, with Mark Samuels including "The Abandoned" among the best horror films he watched recently along with "The Orphanage".

I am surprised to see that it gets such mediocre reviews. I think, for a film which went staright to DVD (as far as I remember) it is great. To me it is clear that those critics don't know what is good in horror genre these days.

I think it was the overall atmosphere of that creepy farm and the way those sequences in the house were shot that somehow reminded me of Session 9.

I later discovered that Session 9 is mentioned in an interview with Nacho Cerda :
