I recently saw on Instagram that Chiroptera Press will put this book on sale tomorrow (Thursday at noon): H. P. Lovecraft: Collected Fiction, Vol. 4, edited by S. T. Joshi and illustrated by “Karmazid”.

Personally, I would really like to own a book from Chiroptera Press someday, and since H. P. Lovecraft is my favorite author, I will buy it if I can.

I will use this thread to keep updating Chiroptera Press news regularly, in order to keep you up to date.

This Thursday we’re launching a deluxe edition of the Robert W. Chambers classic, The King in Yellow. This edition is annotated by S. T. Joshi and is fully illustrated by @jeremyhush. More soon!

“Robert W. Chambers’s short story collection The King in Yellow (1895) has become a classic of weird fiction. It was praised by H. P. Lovecraft as a book that “achives notable heights of cosmic fear.” Its first several stories are interconnected narratives featuring recurring characters as well as a hideous play entitled The King in Yellow that induces madness in anyone who reads it. Such figures from that play as Cassilda, Camilla, and especially the King in Yellow himself have gone on to inspire dozens of writers to write stories inspired by Chambers’s conception—which he himself derived in part from Ambrose Bierce.”

To be honest with you, and I swear this by the Virgin Mary as a Catholic, Harry O. Morris is someone who inspires a lot of respect in me. I have no idea whether he is alive or dead, but I love his aesthetic and his art. I’ve become deeply involved with his work these past few days; it’s so underground, too. I have a friend who owns some issues of Nyctalops, and I want to get a few myself since they’re quite affordable on eBay... but if they ever put together a collection edited by Chiroptera Press, that would be even better.
 
It always had its own aesthete, and was a contrast to the slicker magazines of that era (Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction), as well as the two leading fanzines (Weirdbook and Whispers).
Nyctalops really seemed to take off with the arrival of Ligotti, as well as art by newcomer J K Potter.

This is a deluxe hardcover edition of the corrected text issued by Fenham Publishing edited by Eddy's grandson Jim Dyer, which also includes a new Foreword by him. Our edition also includes scans of the original art used in their original Weird Tales appearances, and new cover art by Jeremy Hush. Standard edition will run $72 each, and a very limited slipcase edition will run $160 each, which just over 40x copies will be available.
C. M. Eddy, Jr. The Loved Dead and Other Tales

In this collection of C.M. Eddy's works highlights seven of his Weird Tales Magazine creations, together with a variety of his other lesser-known tales.
Story headings from four of these tales are reproduced from the original artwork by Andrew Brosnatch, an artist whose illustrations were showcased on fifteen Weird Tales covers.
The stories range from Mr. Eddy's first nationally published fiction, "Sign of the Dragon", a detective mystery story to "The Loved Dead", perhaps his most infamous story. This horrific tale of the exploits of a tortured soul's dark descent into unspeakable deeds against his fellow citizens, is told from the protagonist's point of view.
C.M. Eddy's most prolific period of short story writing was during the years 1919 through 1922 - the time the majority of this collection was produced.
The original handwritten manuscripts were used for the texts while editing this book. These thirteen tales show the diversity and range that C. M. Eddy, Jr. displayed as an author and storyteller.


Honestly, I like this initiative. Coming from the English-speaking side of Lovecraft fandom, where a more purist approach tends to prevail, it's especially encouraging. It would be great to see something similar done with the collaborations between Duane W. Rimel and H.P. Lovecraft. We already have a volume dedicated to those works in Spanish.

Are these in fact collaborations with HPL? I've always been under the impression that the C.M. Eddy stories were written entirely in his own hand.

Technically, and based on my knowledge as an encyclopedist working with Lovecraft-related databases, “The Loved Dead” is generally considered a collaboration between C. M. Eddy Jr. and H. P. Lovecraft, although the exact extent of Lovecraft’s contribution has been debated among scholars. They also maintained an extensive correspondence. I have not been able to read it in its entirety, but perhaps someone here has.

It's been well over thirty years since I read 'The Loved Dead', and I dont recall it's history. Ditto for the Arkham House book of HPL revisions (The Horror in the Museum), which I no longer have and if memory serves, I found many of the stories forgettable. I do remember quite enjoying the C.M. Eddy stories I've read. Hopefully the Chiroptera book will include a history of the tales included.

In these ten stories, Crisp takes us from the spectral purlieus of the ghost of a suicide, searching in vain for a mortal confidante on a hilltop over a provincial town ('Troubled Joe'), to the future melancholy of a world in the early stages of human immortality, where a holographic environment is taking over the natural and man-made world ('Karakasa'), to the despairing confession of a photographer who tries to capture the spirit of a secluded village, only to understand too late that the spirit is a mutating and contagious plague of fear ('Ynys-y-Plag'), and on through a variety of intimately portrayed settings, both familiar and fantastical, to a final cri de coeur with the novelette 'Suicide Watch', in which, against the background of the doomed, anxiety-drenched present age, one suicidal loser attempts to save another.

Bookended by tales of suicide, Crisp's fourth collection of shorter fiction expands on his previous work, such as the cornerstone collection of twenty-first century weird, Morbid Tales, to go both wider and deeper. Varying his stylistic palette to include the dream-like science fiction of 'Karakasa', the twisted naturalism of 'Asking For It' and the sentimental whimsicality of 'Italiannetto', Crisp simultaneously intensifies the confessional tone of many of his earlier tales, here present throughout, and with 'Ynys-y-Plag' brings us perhaps his most chilling depiction of supernatural evil.

A shapeshifting collection, by turns humorous and bleak, otherworldly and mundane, All God's Angels, Beware! will appeal to all those readers who are as eager to explore the obscurer recesses of the imagination as they are to fathom the darker depths of the human heart. If H.P. Lovecraft, Mishima Yukio and Philip Larkin put their heads together to create a new genre, the result might be something like this.
Quentin S. Crisp was born in the seventies in North Devon, U.K. He studied Japanese at Durham University, graduating in the year 2000. After graduation he taught English in Taiwan and studied the works of Higuchi Ichiyo at Kyoto University’s Faculty of Letters. His first collection of fiction, The Nightmare Exhibition, was published in 2001, by BJM Press, his second collection, Morbid Tales (Tartarus Press), following in 2004. Since then, he has had work released through a number of publishers, including the novella Shrike (PS Publishing), which was shortlisted for the Shirley Jackson Award in 2009, and the 2019 novel Graves (Snuggly Books), a Gothic tour through modern death anxiety. He currently resides on the outskirts of London and works as a freelance writer and editor.

At the tender age of fourteen, Ramsey Campbell began writing pastiches of the weird fiction of H. P. Lovecraft. In 1961 he sent a batch of stories to August Derleth, Lovecraft’s publisher and the proprietor of Arkham House. Not knowing how young Campbell was, Derleth found merit in the stories, but he made a prescient suggestion: he urged the teenager from Liverpool to set the stories in the present day and in England. Campbell immediately took Derleth’s advice, creating a network of imaginary cities in the Severn Valley—Severnford, Brichester, Goatswood, and Temphill—that echoed Lovecraft’s constellation of fictitious New England cities.

Derleth graciously gathered these early stories as The Inhabitant of the Lake and Less Welcome Tenants (1964). But soon thereafter, the English writer moved on to write dense, complex stories that used Lovecraft’s conceptions as a springboard for the expression of Campbell’s evolving vision of a world where social and domestic conflict, sexual trauma, and other modern concerns are at the forefront.

This volume collects stories from the two decades of Campbell’s career and display how dramatically he evolved from a competent imitator to one of the pioneering writers of weird fiction in our time.



The Oxford Companion to English Literature describes Ramsey Campbell as “Britain’s most respected living horror writer”, and the Washington Post sums up his work as “one of the monumental accomplishments of modern popular fiction”. His awards include the Grand Master Award of the World Horror Convention, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Horror Writers Association, the Living Legend Award of the International Horror Guild and the World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2015 he was made an Honorary Fellow of Liverpool John Moores University for outstanding services to literature. His latest novels are Fellstones, The Lonely Lands, The Incubations and An Echo of Children. His Brichester Mythos trilogy consists of The Searching Dead, Born to the Dark and The Way of the Worm. His collections include Waking Nightmares, Ghosts and Grisly Things, Told by the Dead, Just Behind You, Holes for Faces, By the Light of My Skull, Fearful Implications, and a two-volume retrospective roundup (Phantasmagorical Stories) as well as The Village Killings and Other Novellas. His non-fiction is collected as Ramsey Campbell, Probably and Ramsey Campbell, Certainly, while Ramsey’s Rambles collects his video reviews, and Six Stooges and Counting is a book-length study of the Three Stooges. Limericks of the Alarming and Phantasmal is a history of horror fiction in the form of fifty limericks.

The table of contents of this volume is very interesting, with some excellent authors and fascinating topics. I’d particularly like to see what Joshi wrote.
