Creepy Comedy: Horror as Humor

As I've mentioned before, there are few tropes in modern TV comedy I enjoy more than the comedic approach to creepiness which is something I imagine other folks 'round these parts might appreciate as well, so here are a few of my favorite bits:

League of Gentlemen I've seen; it's something I liked watching and had really wanted to love, especially given the creators' influences were pretty close to my own heart, but for whatever reason it didn't have much of an overall effect on me. I did quite enjoy the holiday special, though. Psychoville is something I've heard some good things about, but have yet to watch.

A little snippet from Wonder Showzen, one of my all-time favorites and a veritable goldmine for this sort of thing:

I adore Tim & Eric's work. They make my masochistic nature tingle with all the depraved strangeness of their comedy. I flinch, I cringe and I gag, but I still keep coming back for more. The Steve Brule spinoff show is quite good as well.

-0. 07 is eerily similar to a nightmarish Al Columbia drawing. . .

I find this to be simultaneously (albeit inexplicably) hilarious while retaining the creeping disorientation of a fever dream.

One of the most wonderfully disturbing things I've seen of late; if Funny Games was retooled into a superficial showbiz/celebrity program. . .

Jackson's Bad Taste and Braindead are minor works of genius. Such a pity that he sacrificed his talents to churning out soulless Hollywood productions.
I couldn't agree more. I think the last fairly decent film Jackson made (that I almost enjoyed anyway) was The Frighteners, and that might only be due to the fact that I find it very difficult to dislike any film featuring Jeffrey Combs--even if he's only playing a minor role.

Braindead is a hugely entertaining film if you enjoy that sort of thing, and chock full of great splattery setpieces, but this scene has a simplicity that I just adore:

It isn't "retooled" all that much, really. Actually I would say that this rubbishy little show is actually superior to Funny Games as it is working on several different levels. Thanks for bringing it to my attention; I only wish you had mentioned it after a few more eps were available...now I can't wait for the next brilliant train-wreck.

While I find this short to be mildly funny, (despite its humorous intent) I also find it to be vaguely strange and slightly unsettling... I think it must be the kids that I find disturbing.

Evil Dead 2 is probably my favourite horror comedy. The specific scene in which Ash sits down, the chair breaks, and everything starts laughing is both creepy (as it's Ash basically tipping over insanity) and hilarious due to its sheer unreality.

-Not the best quality by any means, but in a way being recorded from a tv adds to the viewing experience. . .

- And so it begins again, from a show that pretty much defines the term 'creepy comedy'. . .

Well, I would recommend: The League of Gentlemen (Seasons 1 and 2, but not 3 nor the movie), Inside No. 9, (especially that third episode, as well as the last!), Psychoville, and Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
