Do We Even Exist?

LOL.

At least I know that I wasn't writing off-topic when I mentioned this mouse.

Indeed not! Although, to avoid this board being dragged into the gutter, I think we should insist on its being a mouse caught by Schrodinger's cat. Since Schrodinger's cat was both alive and dead, so perhaps would be the mouse - except that the mouse is alive in so far as the cat is dead, and dead in so far as the cat is alive. Maybe it's more complicated than that - with the mouse dead in any case, but simultaneously poisoned along with the cat and devoured by the cat on not being poisoned.

Perhaps I should have stuck with toilet training the mouse. :(

Alright, folks. Let's calm down and take a breather. First off, I am wholly intent that my position in this foray must remain neutral from my own opinion on the matter at hand. Since there have been numerous insults by multiple parties, I am simply going to issue a general warning here. Please respect one another as best you can. Negative comments and arguments are allowed and to be expected. Indeed, they can often be the catalyst for great insight and expression. I am sternly opposed to censorship here, as long as excessive profanity and remarks of personal debasement are avoided. I do reserve the right to make judgment calls on what I consider to be offensive material and behavior, however. I do pay the bills, after all.

At this point I'm not concerned with who started the argument, who made the most recent insult or who was insulted to the greatest degree. This thread has degenerated into a path of unacceptable behavior. Continue the argument if you feel so compelled, but know that remarks of sharp personal insult may be met with official Yellow Card warnings, regardless of the party or motive. My surgical skills are sharp but oblivious to discretion between benign and malignant tissue, but instead honed on the removal of the offending portion of the body. I hope everyone understands the position I am forced to take here. It is not an easy stance, but one which I feel is my duty.

Albie has the distinguished reputation of receiving the only Yellow Card in the history of TLO. Upon retrospection, I later removed it when I considered that I issued it based on my own opinions and the degree of personal offense perceived in the way he chose to express himself at that time. I do not personally find any amount of common ground with him, and have been repeatedly puzzled and even distressed by his posts. However, unconventional thinking and general negativity is permissible within TLO, even if it is directed to Thomas Ligotti. In fact, I really don't believe he would have a passing care - even if the statements might be speculative, erroneous or mean-spirited. Most responses have been in his defense and of noble intent, as all parties should have naturally expected. Everyone can make a choice to ignore or argue in the event that they are opposed to an idea expressed here, but please cease attacking one another personally within this thread. At this point, I have not even read the entirety of the posts. In fact, I reserve the right to change my stance once I read the full content. Nearing the end of this post, I realized that I might be interfering with nature taking course. Verdict as yet undetermined. Proceed with caution.

I have no wish to insult anyone on this board, Dr Bantham - and certainly not you, but reading your post I did wonder whether your card might be yellow because the mouse had pissed on it.

I thought that I might defuse frayed tempers with a joke, and seemed to have succeeded.

Taking the mouse business on to a consideration of a mouse caught by Schrodinger's cat perhaps re-introduced something worthy of consideration and, better yet, something cognate to the question posed by the thread title.

Thanks, Cyril. I didn't know there were any social groups here, let alone Knights of Ligotti. I have now joined it and will honour its tenets.

O Odalisque, your post above about the mouse and the yellow card is probably the aptest yet. Your post, also, on the 'Who Are You?' thread about 'Alice' has drawn to my attention (reminded me?) how the Carroll book is germane to this thread and to TL's works in general. Bravo!

No need to worry, Odalisque. My comments were not directed at any one party or even side. I personally found your comments more full of wit than contempt for anyone. I took the time to read the entirety of the thread and have now decided to let things take course as they may. Albie has shown disrespectful behavior and he has received as much in kind. I assume he is either remarkably insensitive or intentionally provoking membership, therefore he will either experience no personal insult or get the rise he desires. Either way, it is a predicament of quite natural cause and effect. Therefore, I have decided that issuing Yellow Cards at this time is not appropriate, and most certainly not for anyone responding to clear provocation or in the defense of a friend. Until my mode should shift once again, all parties shall proceed as personal ethics dictate. This includes you, Albie.

Maybe it's just me, but I in fact like where this topic is going.
Albie may not had that intention, but his/her intervention gave this discussion a whole new dimension.
That's way I hope to see more of her/his posts here,
helps with my research

I allowed myself to be knighted as well. I am honoured to learn that thanks to this thread I've simultaneously become an emissary!

I consider Albie an essential salte within the body of membership and have quite enjoyed some of his posts as well. I sincerely do wish he decides to have a stay. I would prefer, however, that he remain complex and thought provoking and refrain from being simply provoking and thoughtless. Many of these fine gentlemen I consider my very close friends, and my pledge to remain neutral may falter in the face of future offenses against my brethren.

I officially dub thee Sir des! I will prowl garage sales in search of a round table for planning strategies and the obligatory quaff. I doubt that any of us own horses, so the clacking of coconuts will have to suffice for now...

Albie has been permanently banned from TLO for inappropriate language and disrespectful behavior to members. This has been decreed by secret voting among members of The Sect of the Idiot. It is important to note that he is being banned for being verbally offensive to TLO members, not for stating opinions about Thomas Ligotti that might have been offensive to members. Other than hackers and spammers, Albie is the only member to have ever been banned from TLO. This was a difficult decision, but one which was deemed to be in the best interest of the community. Note that Thomas Ligotti has no direct interaction or sponsorship of this site. In the end, the decision was made to protect the harmony of the community from a negative person that seemed consistently bent on disruption and disrespect. After the ban was placed, I received a deluge of horrid profanity via email from Albie. My initial reservations regarding the ban have now been dismissed.

Too bad
He exists no more

For I will not read his story and shall never remember him
We should get on with this topic or all is said about existence?

Hey, Dr. B., I know this if quite off topic but didn't you win an auction on eBay back in the day of a RPG called Pain Doctors: A Game of Recreational Surgery? Is this how you perfect your skills? (just kidding, of course!)
