Regarding the photo of Jonathan above --
Are you aware, Jonathan, that there's a certain Jack-Nicholson-as-The-Joker aura hovering about that snapshot? That struck me when I first saw it. And it certainly isn't a bad thing.
Also, have I ever told you that you're one of those people who's photographic image pairs quite naturally and appropriately with his voice? Which again isn't a bad thing at all. (Taking the present photo into consideration, I should clarify that I don't mean to say you sound like The Joker.)
As for the two photos of Tom that I've seen, I've never been bothered by having been exposed to his visual image. The sound of his voice, however, did throw me a bit, not because of any inherent clash between its quality and that of the one I had long been hearing internally when I read his stories and emails, but because the first time I heard it was in the "hidden" track at the end of C93's ALL THE PRETTY LITTLE HORSES, and the sound of it there is dramatically different from the sound of it on THE UNHOLY CITY and THIS DEGENERATE LITTLE TOWN. I understand that when he recorded his reading for the C93 album coda, he was speaking in hushed tones over a phone connection, so that probably accounts for the difference. But it still threw me a bit when I had been thinking that he was such a soft-spoken man with such a quietly modulated voice, and then I listened to those other two albums and was presented with a much-different voice, rather large and slightly husky, whose tonal quality is much affected, or so I strongly suspect, by his many years of cigarette smoking.
