Thomas Ligotti appearing in a Signed Ltd Edition

Just to be clear, I’m not adding my voice to the ones complaining, merely curious. The Potter cover looked fine, but if for some reason it’s no longer available, this one is certainly better than many I’ve seen from the major publishers today.

Wow . . .thanks for all the feedback. I should have clarified that this ai construct is a prelim concept idea for a cover that AI suggested. We didn't even try to hide that since the file name indicates it is indeed an AI image. Cover art and book packaging is highly subjective and we are looking for ideas and suggestions to make this a really nice book.. So . . folks, please, keep those cards and letters flying.

To be honest, I find it almost insulting to show a cover made with AI about a project involving Thomas Ligotti when you have a lot of artists on this forum who would be honored to have their work associated with Ligotti's name. I understand money might be an issue, but by wanting to make your product cheaper, you will suffer a massive loss and backlash.
That is great information--Can I invite any and all artists to get in touch at info@borderlandspress.com. We wold love to see your work and any ideas you may have

He asked for feedback, and no, I don’t know who I’m addressing.

I have no reason to know who he is; I’m simply commenting on what he projects. I won’t say anything more because there’s no point.

I apologize if I was rude. Perhaps I went a little too far with the criticism, but I had my reasons. I won’t say anything more about it. As for the feedback he asked for, I’d simply say: don’t use AI for the cover; it doesn’t look good. I feel that readers and authors deserve more respect, both for what they pay and for who they are.

And if we’re talking about respect, I believe that, on this site, the person who deserves respect is Thomas Ligotti. I feel that using an AI-generated cover in this way is disrespectful to him. Tom is his friend (that’s what he said earlier), and out of respect for the friendship they share, I won’t argue about it. Once again, I apologize if I was rude.
no apology necessary--if you know anything about me, you would know I love honest criticism (especially since I've authored plenty of mine of the decades). so please bring it on. We only tried to AI to see what kind of concepts our descriptions of the actual text of the book would generate/inspire/etc.

With all due respect...

Do you even know who you are addressing? Mr. Monteleone has been a published author since the late 1970s and has written numerous fine books. His novel Night Train is a horror classic. He is due far more respect than to be lectured by a millennial. I apologize if I'm coming across as being excessively harsh. Tom is an old hand at writing and publishing; he knows what he's doing. The bottom line is if one doesn't like the book; don't buy it.
we have a website (borderlandspress.com) but we have not featured it there yet because we are in the earliest stages of production. We have been a small press since 1989 and have published a who's who of horror writers over the years. We have won awards and a goodly amount of praise and a reputation for being honest and fair. And we really appreciate hearing from all of you who like what we do--which is publish very limited, signed editions for people who like that sort of thing.

Even longer than that. I just found a copy of his early collection Dark Stars and the stories in that go back to 1972, I believe. Besides his own celebrated work as a writer, as editor and publisher he’s published the biggest names in horror, including Ligotti.

I think it looks okay. Better than most AI work I’ve seen, and vastly better than most of the hastily cobbled together “digital art” covers that have flooded the market.

Just wondering, though, what happened to the originally planned cover art? Didn’t the original design feature work by JK Potter?
Yes, that's correct! But Doug has decided he has lost his fascination with Potter's "look" and wanted to try something different

I have to admit I always get jumpy when I see anything made with AI, even if it is just a "concept". I have come to associate any use of Generative AI with art theft, pollution and a loss of cognitive abilities at a massive scale. I'm just tired and angry to see it everywhere and I can guarantee I'm not the only one who feel this way. There's massive justified backlash against this technology going on, and not only among "millenials". I hope you can understand how damaging it can be for both your reputation and Thomas Ligotti's.
I appreciate that you have decided to give potential artists an opportunity to reach out to you though.

I will confess the stars and stripes mockup bothered me.
Would not normally, but during this "To the victor belong the spoils" regime it strikes me as endorsement.

Otherwise, add my name to BP fans. I have purchased 50+ of their titles.
They were the last USA press I bought from, until health issues truncated my book allowance.
The fact that they do not demand payment until publication says it all.
Many of us have paid other presses in advance, only to wait months - years - a decade or more.
I've written before, the Monteleone's are good people.
