Re: Create your own short story collection!

Many of these titles I've read before, but there are still quite a few I have not. It'll be fun tracking all of them down and reading the little dollings.

"Thomas Ligotti is a master of a different order, practically a different species. He probably couldn’t fake it if he tried, and he never tries. He writes like horror incarnate.”

Re: Create your own short story collection!

One of the Missing - Ambrose Bierce (everyone should read this!)
Intimacy - Jean Paul Sartre
The Fall - Albert Camus (well, it's a novella...)
Our Temporary Supervisor - Thomas Ligotti (my favourite of his)
The Fall of the House of Usher - E. A. Poe
Dread - Clive Barker (A bit pulpy, but highly effective)
A Country Doctor - Franz Kafka (His best story)
The Book of Sand - Jorge Luis Borges
The Outsider - H.P. Lovecraft
Pickman's Model - H.P. Lovecraft (Probably cheating, but both of these are simply great)

I'm not a big reader of short stories, but I will make sure to
check out some of your entries.

Joel Lane formally acknowledged its influence upon his novella "The Witnesses Are Gone" as his printed footnote within the book of the novella itself.

Re: Create your own short story collection!

- Since I posted my list of essential weird british fiction, I realized that two stories I read since compiling the list years earlier, Quentin S. Crisp's 'Ynys-y-Plag' and Stephen Laws' 'The Crawl' are both very deserving of a place therein.

Re: Create your own short story collection!

My second pass at this. This time more thought out and with the flow of reading a collection takin into account. The Festival- Lovecraft, The Fall of the House of Usher- Poe, Bianca's Hands- Sturgeon, Bloodchild- Butler, The Spider- Ewers, Fumes- Grabinski, The Metamorphosis- Kafka, The Forrest- Barron, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream- Ellison, The Bungalow House- Ligotti, Orpheus at Mount Pangeum- Kiernan, Madame Edwarda- Bataille, Ghorla- Samuels, The Trains- Aickman, The Scar- Campbell.
I want to represent with small samples my main interests in literature.. Early gothic, cosmic, east European pessimistic, weird gloomy scifi, French perverted surrealism, quiet English horror, body horror, and the points where they intersect.

Re: Create your own short story collection!

And once again I must lament the almost utter lack of Asian literature in these lists... I want to be more read in that field but there seems to be not much in the way of translated books available.
