My first rejected illustration bid from my newly minted career as an illustrator!!!

I just had my first rejection as an illustrator! The first project that I attempted was deemed "too dark and zombie-like..."

It was a chance for $400 dollars a month to do a 1 panel cartoon for an internet security company, but even with the lame text my illustrations were suprisingly considered too morbid for their tastes.

At this point being rejected is almost as exciting as getting accepted. I never seriously considered selling artwork until recently. I'm pretty confused over the zombie-like comparison though.

Re: My first rejected illustration bid from my newly minted career as an illustrator!

David, I really like what I have seen of your work. I was immediately reminded of the artwork of Tom Bagley who illustrated Mr. Ligotti's "I Have a Special Plan for This World" in its magazine appearance in Horror Garage.

"What does it mean to be alive except to court disaster and suffering at every moment?"

Tibet: Carnivals?
Ligotti: Ceremonies for initiating children into the cult of the sinister.
Tibet: Gas stations?
Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

I thought of the same illustration!

I hope this singular comparison does not imply a lack of originality, however. I too enjoy the work displayed thus far!

Re: My first rejected illustration bid from my newly minted career as an illustrator!

When I saw that picture I thought the same thing! Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to see the Horror Garage IHASPFTW, but as I was looking through some of the art posted in the galleries I immediately noticed the similarity. One of my major influences, although it doesn't necessarily show in the illustrations, is Harry Clarke. I was glad to see a whole section on the site dedicated to his work. Thank you both for your compliments.- David

Here is the comic I quickly drew up and sent in response to their critique:
