Not half bad. I might rate this a tentative 12 on my completely arbitrary, non-linear ranking scale of -505 to 795 Bloody Needles. It reminded me a little of a Bradbury story, "Embroidery" (not really "cosmic horror" except in the most general sense in which
everything is).
So much of life, human life, anyway, only seems possible because of every individual's ability to maintain a persistent, unconscious hope, even in the face of mounting evidence to the contrary, that the worst, in whatever undreamt-of form it might take, will never come to pass.
Until it does.
