Re: Jan Matejko

I don't know any intentionality behind that wonderful painting, but I feel it is a sort of puppet of me.
But directly one talks of any 'me' one becomes pretentious.

I am accustomed to seeing this painting from time to time (it being so popular in Poland), but have never realized how well fits on TLO. Thank you, Des.
Btw, the face of the sad jester is actually Matejko's self-portrait.

Thanks, Slawek. I'm very interested by what you say. When you say 'popular in Poland', is that 'iconic'? A National symbol?

I'm amazed I've never seen this painting before - one that strikes a deep chord with me.

Re: Jan Matejko

Not exactly. Jan Matejko is considered to be Poland's most distinguished painter when it comes to historical, political and military events in the history of Poland and Stańczyk was the painting with which Matejko won recognition.

Stańczyk has some historical importance too (it’s not a national symbol though). With Stańczyk Matejko is touching upon the subject of Poland’s struggle for independence.

You can read about the painting’s historical meaning here:

Polish Art Center - Court Jester Stanczyk 1480 - 1560

Btw, Stańczyk appears on other paintings by Matejko (a fact I wasn’t aware of):

Sorry, wrong! Obviously in a way Stańczyk is a national symbol.

Yes, but the painting itself isn't.

It's fascinating to divide myself between the background to this painting (artistically and historically) and viewing the pure Ligottian image.
It's a test case of some sort...

Wow, he's pretty tough to distinguish, even though he's right in front of my nose
