Étienne-Martin's sculpture Hommage à Lovecraft (1951-1956) initiated a whole series of works based on weird architectural spaces. I've posted three examples below. The second one, Celle qui veille (the one who sleeps), could possibly be a hidden reference to HPL's "The Call of Cthulhu".
Since none of these are carvings, this is probably going a bit off-topic, but I've made an album in my profile with some other works, including the original hommage to Lovecraft, in case anyone is interested. Obviously, I think these sculptures are incredible : ) | |||||||||||
