It's true that other works predate Land's manifesto, but I don't think chronology has anything to do with relevance. Like I said, Land's manifesto in Chasm could potentially be of value to someone who wants to learn more about abstract horror. I certainly found it interesting when I read it--and I find Land's politics repulsive.

Additionally, authors don't get to decide how their work is interpreted--or how it's categorized--after they release it out into the world. It no longer belongs to them. As such, readers should view/interpret each work as a separate entity from the person who created at. That's just my philosophy, though. I'm sure others disagree.

You care enough to post, expecting thanks/support for you claims of "not caring" from one side in this discussion.

Land personally has ####-all to do with the alt-right. Indeed, he is a critic of them.

Do you even understand what his reasons for disliking alt right are? Not the same as yours or mine, to say the least.

It is pointless for some of you to try to whitewash him, when even the slightest look at his blog or twitter tells all that one needs to know.

Land's comments in the article I posted speak for themselves on why he dislikes the alt-right. Presenting facts straight from the horse's mouth isn't whitewashing. Maybe some of us just find the ####er fascinating like all of us find Ligotti, Lovecraft, and Ewers fascinating.

It seems like a fair amount of alt-right people have partially modelled their stances on his work.
It is funny to imagine his frustration at being more influential on the alt-right than anyone else.

A bit unfair on Ligotti, who has no comparable political extremism.

Re: Absences and Inhumanity: Six Works of Abstract Horror

Having deliberately avoided a great deal of contemporary philosophy for the last two years, I'm a bit surprised to hear about this Land controversy. I saw him as an interesting figure inspired by the works of Bataille, but nothing more than that to be honest. Of course, as an academic, he probably feels compelled to distinguish himself in order to stay relevant. It's certainly disingenuous, but it's how the game is played.

He would've been better off working an office job. At least that way he could've lived a more authentic lifestyle.

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."

~ Clark Ashton Smith, "The Devotee of Evil"
